Is this same Screenshot from Vista possible on XP?

The "Screenshot" (?) below was taken from a post/thread of mine here (Malware Forum) and off of my Vista OS by a Malware Tech in that Forum here at MG's. Can anyone tell me how I would go about finding the same (or next best) thing on a different PC running XP?

    Thanks in advance ...

    Try Start>Run>type in control userpasswords2

It will give you a list of users on your computer and their privilege group.

Start>Control Panel>Users Accounts will give you a similar list but won't include The Administrator account.

Amazing. Thank you. All these YEARS (6?) of "trying" to keep this PC safe for my folks, and I just now find-out about this.

I find it all very, very (EXTREMELY!) confusing, especially as I am now "trying" to learn Vista (make it secure & KEEP IT SECURE) on my own PC at home.

I just made ALL the "Accounts" or whatever they're called on my moms PC here as "Users" Group (using the method you described of typing into the "Run" box or giving the "Run" command, or whatever) - all except the Administrator, which is NOW, the only one in the "AdministratorS" Group. All this is occuring as it appears the PC has been Hijacked, or something - I don't know what you would call it exactly. Every time I try to "Set Program Access and Defaults", they are IMMEDIATELY changed back to something else. I installed and have run CW Shredder several times (I think it's the one from Trend Micro, not the original), and it keeps telling me that it has "REMOVED" "CWS.HiddenDll", and "CWS.Jksearch" - but they come right back on the next scan. The PC is also doing other weird stuff (such as not allowing me to use any of the things [gadgets?] above such as "B" (Bold) "I" (Italics) nor "U" (Underline) - among other weird goings-on ...

I did a Search here on the two "CWS" reports but seems that they may not be the culprit (?). I also tried to purge these "CWS" things with PocketKillbox - to no avail. Seems I can't use that program without knowing the full "path".

This stuff is really becoming rather nightmarish ... thanks again - and any suggestions at this point are certainly welcomed!

Ok. Now that I've made these "security" changes, naturally, I still have the problems that I had before I started this thread (and more ... "New & Improved" ;) "problems"/"issues"), but also now, I cannot seem to perform a System Restore (says I 'don't have sufficient privileges' or some such thing, & that I need to log-out or log-off and log back in as an administrator) which I was 100% counting-on to try to right this ship.

Can anyone please possibly tell me how I may accomplish this simple task, which I used to be able to perform - and have performed a good number of times over the years ... and which HAS pulled me out of problems with this PC before.

    Please.

    Thanks.

Ok, yes. After several/multiple attempts I was able to perform a Restor (thanks). The first few came-back as "Keyboard failure" - and even the last attempt did - but did then finally allow me to boot into Safe Mode.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to go back as far as i had wanted (prior to or a "PRE"-SP3 state), but, it is what it is ...

Now where do I go (?) ... I haven't the foggiest. I honest to God have no clue. The more I seem to try to do to make my PC's "secure", the more problems I seem to have.

Thanks (many!) go to StudioT here at MG's, as "we" (uh, mostly "he") helped me due a complete "reformat" (?) - an entire "wipe", or uninstall/reinstall just over a year ago due to major problems after having lost a component within the machine during a storm.

But I still seem to have been Hijacked here currently - Bookmarks are "missing", I'm unable to use features such as "B"/"I" & "U" above, problems with Copy/Paste etc., and the "Set Program Access and Defaults" feature now has COMPLETE control over ITSELF.

I honestly believe that these "people" (hackers, whatever) that cause harm to computers SHOULD be rapidly rounded-up and PUBLICLY HARMED themselves (in as humiliating form/fashion as is conceivable) - starting with a progressive severing or detachment (removal or uninstall) of their respective digits/phalanges/fingers, including but not limited to the removal of entire limbs, for future infractions (SHOULD they happen to be so bold ... however "something" [common sense?] tells me that with this type of "correction", they just might "see the light" - get a life, adjust and amend their LOW-LIFE, SUB-HUMAN doings - and leave others ALONE!!!

Of course, if they were to continue with their MAl-icious conduct via means of mouth, their tongues could (SHOULD!) be "removed/UN-installed" ... as painfully as possible - as well. :) ;)

    grc123,
What possessed you to go to Vista, if you don't mind my asking? XP is quite a bit easier and it might be that you'd find it a better operating system for you and your mom?

yes ma'am - that could well be the problem ("me" ... "operator error") - but preceding that is always an "Update" (such as AVG 8.0 - which seemed to fail to function properly on both machines that I (try to!) "oversee" - one (1) with XP & one (1) with Vista.

Additionally, the SP3 (from Microsoft WU - go figure!?!) which unfortunately was done on the same date as the AVG 8.0 fiasco(s) (and by the way, which I regrettably unistalled [Grisoft/AVG], and switched to another AV ... I had used AVG for years and was happy with it!).

    Any suggestions my dear?

Not always, it depends on learning curve of user, I have found older reletives of mine including my parents find Vista much easier to use as it protected them from messing something up, and the help and support section is much better than that of XP, ist in more plain language with video shows on the basics.

@GRC, like Kestrel mentions, do stick to one question as I have read this thread three times and there are multiple areas to cover.

If you wish to secure your PC and I take it the one we are talking about in this thread is XP? then yes do create however many user accounts that are needed for the users as limited account and leave the admin one only for admin tasks, so general usage, surfing etc use the limited user accounts.

Follow this guide on securing your PC from malware How to Protect yourself from malware! and as I dont know your srufing habbits I will generalise and say learn to safe surf and by this I mean if you get any popup windows, read what they are carefully and dont just click yes or ok. Only download from recongnised safe sites ( could use Site Advisor for this, just paste a URL web addrsss in the "lookup a site report" box ) or the developers site, unknown downloads from p2p can and may cause your malware.

Wow - lots of info - I'll try to cut this down into bite-sized pieces.

abri: Vista came with MY new Dell purchased in January of this year (much of my previous experience was with Windows "2000 Professional"? - my folks have had this other Dell since 2002 - of course with XP (both are the "Home" or "Basic" - 'bottom-tier' Editions).

For the purpose(s) of this thread, I'm happy (very!) to stick with info pertaining to XP - and I apologize for confusing things. That may well be a good bit of my problem: ... at my home I'm trying to learn Vista (completely) and forget XP (to an extent), and here, I'm trying to remember (sort of "re-learn") XP, and block Vista from my mind ... ??? IF that makes ANY sense whatsoever ... I don't know - hah.

We really do (desperately try to) practice (I think?) "safe" surfing habits - we use "Favorites/Bookmarks" (no, or very little, typing into the addy bar), no opening of attachments in emails nor opening emails from people that we don't know - no clicking-on links in email(s) (use copy/paste), we do use Site Advisor, and probably have more than sufficient other "protections" - ZoneAlarm FW, SpywareBlaster - updated often (we search-out updates more often than the 1-2 week intervals recommended), only ONE "AV" program - though MULTIPLE "AS" programs (perhaps TOO MANY?). I update ALL these things FEVERISHLY - I actually spend about as much time updating protections as I do surfing/reading email(s).

Not sure what else to do - but I am sure that having had 3 of 4 User Accounts marked as or with "Admin" privileges (and/or as members of the 'Admin's Group' ... and see, here I go with my confusion!?!), well, I don't think that has been safe for some years now (at least one year) . I "THOUGHT" (understood/was under the impression) that we only had ONE "admin" UA on this PC - but thanks to the 2nd reply posted in this thread - I now see that it was otherwise ... and am really still not actually "ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN" that I have this whole admin thing (and "privileges" thing) "straight" - and that we are as "Safe" as we could be ... or SHOULD be (?).

    Thanks to all ...
