I have windows xp professional vs 2002 service pack 3...is it worth me switching over to windows 7? I'm not even sure what the difference is and just want to know if I need to step it up...Can anyone tell me the difference please and should I switch? Also looking for the best free antivirus out there...currently using avg9 but having problems with the resident shield on hubby's laptop...not on mine just his...thanks so much:wave

Is this to buy a copy and replace XP with W7? Does XP do all that you want it to? If yes then the answer is no, you don't need to spend any money on upgrading to W7. Besides, you may have to upgrade your hardware/software too.

TBH DoeZ this whole upgrade business has a lot in common with changing your car. If you are honest with yourself there may be nothing seriously wrong or lacking about your old car, but those new ones look so good, and hey, look at those fuel consumption figures! I could save myself $10 a week!

If new excites you, and you are comfortable with the cost, then yes, go for it. And if at heart you are one of those sensible ppl who aren't taken in by all the clever marketing, and know exactly what they want then the bottom line with Windows 7 is that it is very unlikely to give you something that XP cannot.

That's my view of it all anyway :wave

Old school X P pro SP3 user. H D on Toshiba crashed, so I took my backup, dropped it in, rebooted and still no useable X P from backup. Purchased 640Gb H D, formatted, installed Windows 7 Ultimate and she is running really smooth. Vista was too buggy to chance . I am really Impressed with the ease of inter gration of a lot of my old X P files because I can run them in Win X P mode in 7.

A little late for a reply but I read your thinking about win 7, I can say I was and still am a user of xp on one of my computers but my primary computer is runnng win 7 ultimate and really like it, what you should consider is if you do switch make sure you get a version with 32 bit , from what i read you've had xp for some time so i figured your system is a 32 bit and not a 64 bit. One thing I should mention is most likely your printer and scanner ( if you have one) won't work with win 7 until you get the new drivers for them, Most of your software will but like everything new there will be a little learning curve if you switch. A clean install is best but if it's upgrade HMMMMM be prepaired to get aggravated, Also I think you mentioned your looking for a good AV program in my opinion Spyware doctor from P C Tools is a good one once installed it runs in the background and if a bogas program tries to access your computer while your browsing you get a pretty loud sound asking if you want to allow the program or not, it runs a good scan for viruses and scans the registery for errors and give you a easy one click to fix errors. one thing i tell all is if you didn't ask for it you don't want it so if your on the net and a program pops up and you didn't ask for it ( X ) it out right now----- hope this helps
