Isass.exe and service.exe application errors

Yesterday my computer and internet were running incredibly slow so I restarted my computer and after the Windows screen came up where my desktop would normally come up I got the message "isass.exe-application error The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application." It makes me click it twice then goes to a black screen with only the cursor showing.
First, I have read many forums online with people having this same problem. I booted in safe mode and when it starts I get the same message and black screen in safe mode. I tried running a reinstall of windows xp on my dell and it did nothing. Did it a second time and now I also get a services.exe error. Please save me!

That error is usually caused by a corrupt registry. After doing some basic maintenance on the computer, it might clear up.

http://majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_Slim_d4191.html -- Clean out temp files/junk files, you can leave the checkmarks as defaults on the left hand side
Then go into CCleaner's registry tab, Scan for issues, Fix selected issues
    Then I'd do a full check disc -- chkdsk c: /r
    Then full defrag c: drive

If all else fails, you may end up having to replace that lsass.exe file, or at least compare the file sizes with previous snapshot versions (kind of hard to explain) sorry..

Well, I ended up reinstalling xp and starting fresh. Lost everything. Now when I am trying to connect to the internet I can't. Called charter they show im connected. Under control panel and network connections the only icon is local area connection which has limited or no connectivity. Im plugged directly into my modem. I had the drivers and utilities cd and reinstalled everything but I seem to remember another icon in network connections?

    Sounds like a driver issue.

can you do the following: START > run > devmgmt.msc
    View > Show Hidden Devices

Take a screenshot of that if you can (prtscn / print screen | on keyboard). paste into paint, save, upload as an attachment here.

or just tell us if you see any yellow exclamation marks while in the Device Manager :p

    If so, list which devices.

Yes there is an exclamation next to Serial under nonplug and play drivers and also next to network controller and video controller

I'm sure he soon will be, probably better to actually reread his questions and answer them as fully as you can though, we all pay more attention to a user who pays attention to us - I think that works in RL too ;)

I think you can safely ignore the serial error for the time being, but it looks like you'll need to try to reinstall your chipset drivers at the very least before you can make much progress.

It's a Dell, yes? On the back or underneath if it's a laptop, there should be a Dell Service tag of about 6-8 letters/numbers. Can you find and post it, please?

Umm I think I did fully answer his question?. It asked for the devices that had an exclamation point next to them and I listed every single one. I reread it that's all I see? Anyway the service tag is 9VY1DF1.

Sorry, I just skimmed through and obviously got the wrong end of the stick :-o

I'll check the Dell site for your drivers now.

Ok just making sure. Thanks =)

Ok, got to the Dell support site for your laptop, download the drivers for: AMD processor, the ATI chipset, Broadcom driver and ATI driver for video.

I think the best order to install them would be Chipset, Processor, video then network (Broadcom). A reboot may be needed between many of the installs; any problems, call out, I'm sure someone'll be around to help out.

I can't get on the internet that's the problem lol

You will need another computer with a working internet connection to download these drivers, especially the network driver, then you'll need either a flash drive, CD-Rom, floppy (probably will be bigger than 1.44mb) to copy the driver onto, and then load it into the system with no internet/chipset/video

Here's the onboard lan driver to get you started: http://support.dell.com/support/dow...peid=-1&formatid=-1&impid=-1&checkFormat=true

    Here's the video driver: http://support.dell.com/support/dow...peid=-1&formatid=-1&impid=-1&checkFormat=true

And.. chipset, Since it's ATi graphics I'd try the ATi chipset: http://support.dell.com/support/dow...peid=-1&formatid=-1&impid=-1&checkFormat=true

Ouch, any way you can download them on another machine, transfer the files over with a USB thumb drive, MP3 player or similar?

How are you using the 'net now, 'phone?

Edit: the network drivers are 4MB, floppy transfer will be difficult.

  15. princessdee210

Yep on my phone. Thanks guys guess I'll try to figure out a way to do that.

What memory card type does the phone have, one of the newer micro/mini types, I guess - that might do, providing you have access to an adapter to SDcard so it will fit in the 3-in-1 media memory card reader that I think your laptop has fitted. Or perhaps you could transfer the data over USB cable to it?

Hmm I do have an 8 MB sdcard and adapter and I see a spot on the computer where an sdcard would go but what steps do I take?

Also...on the drivers and utilities cd I have from Dell it did have the Broadcom driver and I did install it.

Yes, you still have the CD, try finding and installing the ATI chipset driver first as the core part of the motherboard usually needs to be fully working before all the more 'peripheral' components can be recognised and installed correctly by Windows.

Once the chipset drivers are installed, try the networking drivers again. Even if they fail, proceed to the ATI graphics drivers, see if they'll install.

I'm not sure how you'd download data to your phone, it probably depends on the make/model, if you post up that info, perhaps someone will chip in with a quick howto.

Transfer should just be a matter of flipping open the card cover, pulling the card, putting it into the adapter and inserting the adapter into the laptop. Wait a few seconds and you should get an auto-popup asking what you want to do.

:cry the ate graphics driver failed after the network and ethernet controllers also failed. The ate display driver says"this display driver is not compatible with the display adapter(s) installed on your system" I don't understand. This is the cd I got when I bought this stupid contraption.

perhaps those drivers were meant for a different version of Windows.

Awesome now it would seem whatever I did in device manager has hit my cd rom drive when I go to my computer

How could I have a diff version of windows if this is what I got when I got the computer. Im so confused im about to throw this dell in the pool. Idk how u guys have the patience for this lol.

    satrow Major Geek Extraordinaire

    It's because we don't have pools ;)

Something's seriously amiss there, do you have all your data secured away from the machine?

  25. princessdee210

Nope. Im going to bed I think im gonna reinstall windows and start fresh again. Ill get back to u tomorrow thanks for your time!

Well im back to the point where under device manager serial, network controllers, and video controllers have yellow exclamation points. Can't figure it out.

The yellow exclamation points are there because either there is no driver installed for that device, or the driver itself is corrupt.

The page you should visit was linked by Satrow: http://support.dell.com/support/dow...stemID=VOS_N_1000&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

Those are the drivers required for your specific laptop (He matched it by the service tag # you provided us with)

Here is the internet driver to at least get your internet working: http://support.dell.com/support/dow...dateid=-1&formatid=-1&source=-1&fileid=206073

Also, just for good measure, when you're in the Device Manager with View Hidden Devices showing..

    Do the following..
Right Mouse click one of the devices with a Yellow exclamation mark next to it
    http://onlineqda.hud.ac.uk/IT_skills/Images/Mouse_buttons.png
    A sub menu should appear

    http://demo.dontcount.com/software/doc/z-device_manager-03.jpg
    Choose Uninstall from this menu
    Choose OK when done
The yellow exclamation mark should now be gone.
The computer may or may not prompt that "you need to restart the computer for the changes to take affect."
Skip this step for now, just keep Uninstalling for the rest of the devices that have yellow exclamation marks..

    When finished, press this button

    http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/julioch888/2010-05-08_013210_a.jpg

This will at least take care of driver corruption that you may have had before. You will most likely see the same amount of yellow exclamation marks as before, possibly less. Just cancel out of any ADD NEW HARDWARE wizards that pop up.

Also, if you were prompted to Delete driver software associated with any of the devices, go ahead and select Yes because this will also delete any remnants of the driver files.

Then all you need is the proper setup files which I linked you above to do a clean install of the drivers you still need.

Download and install this one first: http://support.dell.com/support/dow...dateid=-1&formatid=-1&source=-1&fileid=206073

It's the driver so you can get online. It should be compatible with your computer if you're using Windows XP
