ISP problem or a bad modem or router

It seems I'm losing internet connection more and more .When I do lose internet connection it seems to go down for hour or two than back up.

From yesterday 9:00 PM to day at 2:00 PM it gone down 7 times or more.It goes down for hour or two.

Could this be bad modem or router? Or signs of failing modem or router?

Or some kind of ISP problem?

Note this is new problem that started yesterday.

 

The first thing I would do is call the tech support number for your ISP and have them remotely test your modem. This will often (but not always) detect hardware problems. In addition, ask if they had any service outages in your area during the time you could not connect.

If you are renting the modem by the month, you can demand a new one (if the ISP balks, tell them the alternative is you switching to their competitor).

If you own the modem (or don't want to keep paying rental fees), you can buy cable and DSL modems at places like Best Buy and Amazon. I would go with a stand-alone modem and a separate router. This way, if one dies, it's less expensive to replace.

I agree that "ISP is the likely solver of this problem". Unfortunately. Modems do die at some point, but they are hardly ever flakey - working sometimes, not others. "Dead or Not Dead" is their natural 'state'.

Depending on your ISP, you can also ask that a Tech Support person put your modem on their "Device Watch List", which means they automate a "pinging" function ("Are you there or not?") to your modem.

Ask for a 5-minute interval, not the 15-minute variety, too, because their flakey equipment can often do shutdowns-due-to-overheats for 7 or 10 minutes, then power-back-on and a 15-minute 'check' would never detect that 'outage period'.
