ISP Problems

My friend has Comcast at his location. I installed a new NIC for him, and disabled the integrated nic on the motherboard. After a couple of days, his computer can not access the internet. I brought his computer back to my location and I was able to get online and did many different tests on his desktop. I have a different ISP than Comcast and I have no problem.

Anyone have any suggestions?

When you change the first device connected to the cable modem, you MUST reset the modem by powering it off completely. This means you need to unplug the power cord to the cable modem and also remove the battery if it has a battery backup. If this cable modem provides telephone through Comcast, it almost certainly has a battery backup.

The cable modem remembers the MAC address connected to it and won't clear it until you do a cold boot with it.

After you have powered off the cable modem give it about a minute and restart it with the computer turned off. After the modem finishes booting, about a full minute, start the computer and it should be online.

 

Yes that's a good way to resolve the problem, reset modem to clean MAC Cache as this good man said.

Also you can do a ipconfig /flushdns, and look if your friend haven't touched something.

Do the basic tests to see what's the problem.

> Reset Modem
> ipconfig /release - ipconfig /renew "Did it get ip?"
> ipconfig /flushdns
> TCP / IP automatic

Because the problem is only present at one location, the modem is most likely the problem. Flushing the DNS would only affect the computer, not the modem.
