    OK... here's the scoop.

I have Norton Internet Security 2008 and they send out an update to NIS2009... download the update and tried to install, minor issues about not being able to remove previous program or having to restart system. I restart the system and try to reinstall new version -- still no go.
The Norton tech page refers to the Norton Removal Tool which I used once before and it work well, removed ALL norton programs on the system.
This time out -- it removes norton programs BUT also leaves my system up a creek because it basically dislocated all the other programs & files from their appropriate connections.
    Anyone else have this issue?

    help....

    HI

Could you elaborate on this a bit, terminology in dislocated other programs and files I dont quite grasp?

Please give example of whats happening so we can understand this and hopefully have a fix for you, likey if I read around this if you click say Internet Explorer it doesnt open Internet Explorer, or open correct file locations for say My Documents?

    What Windows version?

Have you tried to now install NIS2009?

Could aslo do a System Restore back to before this happened so that your at a point where these files are ok and if sucessful and alternative uninstaller we could suggest.

OK.. sorry for sort speeding through the posting.

    I am on WinXP Pro.
Tried a System Restore with no luck --- same as post-Norton.
Tried a Last Know Good Config --- same as post-Norton.
Tired to install NIS2009 --- no good, it can't find msiexec.exe --- pops up a "Windows can't open this file: msiexec.exe" "find solution online or chose appropriate program from this list...."

As for the "dislocated" reference.... the Recycle Bin, My Computer and Network Places all work fine and still have the right icon on my desktop BUT other programs and file links do not work right and have generic icons same when you do get into the Windows Explorer... all icons are the same. When trying to open a file (or program), I get the "Windows can't open this file: xxxxx.xxx" Sometimes I can get it back on path but mostly I can't.

I have had some luck switching certain files & programs back to what they should be but it is still not 100%.

Can and will fill in other blanks if I still haven't given the clear picture of what has happened.

    Thank you again.

    Hi bgunn,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.

This issue can be caused by by either a software conflict, or a preexisting problem with the Windows Installer.

Please check to make sure that you have the Windows Firewall and Defender disabled, and that you do not have any other security software that may be conflicting with Norton Internet Security. You may also want to check Msconfig to see if something is loading that may contribute to this problem.

Please follow the following steps to properly remove and reinstall Norton.

    1. Click on the link below, and carefully follow the instructions to use the Norton Removal tool:

    Norton Removal Tool and Instructions

    2. After the tool has run and removed all Norton products, restart your computer. Log into Windows and run the tool again. Restart your computer after it finishes running a second time.

    3. Do a search on your XP system for Norton, Symantec and delete all Norton/Symantec folders, except the Symantec folder in My Documents folder which contains your activation key.

    4. Click on the link below to download the latest installer for Norton Internet Security 2009.

    Re-download Norton Installer

    5. When the installation is complete, launch Norton Internet Security and click on "Run LiveUpdate." When that process is completed, you may be asked to reboot. Next, complete a "Full System Scan" with Norton to check for infections.

Please try this process and let me know the outcome.

    Thanks,
    Mike

I have Norton Security Scan 1.1 version which I am unable to remove even after down laoding the Norton removal tool and running it twice and restarting the system all over. Attempts to remove fron Add & remove Programs from Control panel display an error message 1701 (I think), whcih states that the Installer connected with his prog. is missing some file..
May I have your advice to remove this programme for good..
