Issues with the .zip file extension.

I've run into a small but annoying problem with the .zip file format. Everytime I try to associate the file type with a program it doesn't commit the changes and still remains unassociated. So far here is what I've tried but hasn't worked.

Going into File Types and creating a .zip extension. Doesn't work, once I created it it still didn't associate the file with the program I wanted (WinRaR), so I go back to File Type and look for the extension I created, but it isn't even there.

I've tried to do a registry repair, but that doesn't work.

I tried doing a system restore to see if that helped, but it didn't work either.

Odd thing is that compressed (zipped) folders was the only option that the .zip files would associate too when I selected it. But that doesn't even work now since I went back to a restore point.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

((Also: I recently had a problem with a profile of an old profile I used on WinXP, everytime I tried to access it the system would startup but periodically freeze and unfreeze, took a long time to load and was unable to access sys restore to fix it as that kept freezing up (this was also happening in safe mode. In the end I had to delete the old profile and create a new one.
Do you think this could be a reason why I'm having this problem?

    I have 2 compression utilities.
One handles ZIP and the other handles RAR and the rest.
When I first got the 2nd program it took over ZIP extensions even though I had the first program in charge of then in 'File Types'
Until i disassociated ZIP with the 2nd program within the program itself it kept taking over.
I'm not sure this will help you as you didn't mention having 2 utilities, but I thought I'd offer.

The old profile might be the problem, but it's not that likely.

Try the backend approach. Fire up a command prompt and run these two commands:
    ftype WinRAR.ZIP="C:\Program Files\WinRAR\WinRAR.exe" "%1"
    assoc .zip=WinRAR.ZIP

Be sure to change the path to WinRAR.exe if you need to.

Okay, I tried them. First command works okay, second command is a problem. Once I entered the last command I got this error message:

    Error occurred while processing: .zip

I figured I'd also try it under safe mode command prompt, but that didn't work either.

Okay why is it that the .zip extension doesn't show up in the file types tab under folder options, but it does show up in the registry under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT? And when I try to modify it says:

Cannot edit: Error reading the value's contents.

I try to associate the file extension with WinRAR but when I apply the changes they just don't happen. Also to point out that the .zip file extension only seems to accept Compressed (zipped) Folder option.

    Re: Issue zip

Have you tried the ZipGenius “Totally Free” Program to manage to use open all Zipped files including Rar files [I suggest you use the ZipGenius in preference to the WinZip Program]
