    Hello,

I use Avast AV, Sygate FW, Spyware Blaster, Spyware Guard, Spybot's Tea Timer and scan with AdAware SE, Spybot S&D, and a-Squared -- also, browse with Firefox.

Despite that a Pest Patrol free on-line scan just found two bad guys. I'm kinda new to all this and frankly am scared stiff of the registry; so, could someone please help me get rid of them?

    IST bar - Hijacker
    hkey_local_machine\software\classes\typelib\ (11269241-f241-11cf-bd9a-00aa00575603)

    SpyKeylogger - KeyLogger
    hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\windows\shellnoroam\logs\6\shell

I've followed instructions and opened hidden and system files and scanned with:

    Trend micro = clean
    Symantec = all safe
    McAfee Stinger= clean

    And ran in safe mode:

    CCleaner
    AdAware Se = clean
    Spybot S&D = clean
    CWShredder (fix) = clean
    Kill2me = clean

    I'm on XP/SP2 with 512 MG memory and a 2.5 Celeron processor.

    Thanks.

First, please follow ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

If you already have any of the programs linked in the tutorial please double check your version to make sure you have the latest one and that you have any/all updates for the programs.

After doing ALL of the above if you still have a problem:

Make sure you have HijackThis 1.99 and follow the guidelines on where to install it and how to post a log as an attachment. This is all covered in the sticky thread NO HIJACK THIS LOG FILES BEFORE READING THIS: HJT Tutorial & LOG File Posting

Now post a HijackThis as a .txt file attachment to your message. All running programs should be closed, including your web browser, e-mail. Close before running Hijack This!

Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file. Place it in its own folder, for example C:\Program Files\HJT

    Hello,

I ran all the suggested programs as specified. Everything came up clean but ISTbar and SpyKeylogger persist.

Hopefully, I do this right, and here's my Hijack This log:

All logs including HJT logs should be attached to your post. This will be edited by a mod and converted to a .txt file.

First step, Disable "System Restore" temporarily.

Before removing any entries made by Hijack This please close all browsers, including this one.

    Remove these entries from HJT:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Stationery\Blank.htm
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {AFC3FA82-AD07-45cd-8B57-983435B9899E} - (no file)

Other than these few entries your log looks pretty clean.

You seem to have a few trojan and/or vbs infections. For this I would need you to download these two programs:

    Trojan Hunter

    SpySweeper

    1)Download and install both programs.

2)During install of TrojanHunter it will prompt to update definitions, go ahead and update, also before running SpySweeper update definitions by clicking, Options, Update Definitions.

3)Run full scans on both programs and remove all found entries.

After you have completed these task post new HJT log as well as the SpySweeper log as an attachment to your post.

    Thanks!

NOTE: There is a removal tool available for download to remove the ISTbar Trojan. Download It Here!

Have you looked for the above keys in the registry?

What exactly detected these entries because the Pest Patrol removal instructions for this you have already completed per my instructions and it was clean, so Im thinking your ok.

Yes, I did indeed look for those keys and many others that were listed in Pest Patrol's "manual remove" instructions.

There were no enteries in my registry that pointed to either ISTbar or SpyKeylogger. Perhaps we've been chasing after a couple of Pest Patrol's infamous false-positives?

If so, I apologise for using up so much of your valuable time on a wild goose chase.

If you have ran all those programs and utilities and found nothing, searched for the registry entries and found nothing. Then your most likely clean. Im not sure what Pest Patrol detected but its apparently not there. If you continue to experience problems feel free to let one of us know.

Also please feel free to read this sticky thread about protecting yourself from malware.

Remeber to visit Windows Update to get the latest patches and security fixes.

You're a good man, bjgarrick, and I want to thank you for a clean machine and the peace of mind that comes with it.

All the best to you and your family in the coming new year.

    Thank you, again.
