It was the RAM!

About a month ago I posted about how my comp was failing to boot the BIOS and kept giving me different beep codes. Then I switched out my surge protector and the problem went away.

Well, on Sunday my power supply died. "Oh," I thought, "That explains my earlier problem; my power supply was dying." So I ordered a new power supply, a SEASONIC X650 GOLD, and it arrived today. I installed it and turned on the comp. Oh noes!!!1 It was doing that same thing where it won't boot and keeps giving different beep codes.

Well, as long as my case is open I figured I might as well do a systematic hardware check. I poped out a stick of RAM and it booted fine. Oh, it was a bad stick of RAM. I did some experimentation and it's not the slot it's that one stick.

So problem solved in a strange roundabout way. Just thought you all might find this little tale interesting, and maybe helpful if you ever run into this.

Sometimes we forget about the simple hardware that might be an issue with today's technology. Glad that you were able to find the issue.

 

Yeah, that's what was probably the last straw for your RAM as I'm sure it was starting to go bad a month ago. BTW, a nice call on getting a quality PSU! I've only had a RAM issue once when things were getting corrupted on my HDD running XP and was a n00b ATT.:-D

This is for anyone getting weird corruption issues, run memtest86 first and/or a HDD check. memtest found my issue within seconds of starting the scan. I always have that as part of my rescue disk.
