It's all gone. Just gone. Everything.

It's like I'm freaking computer cursed. I'm using my step-dad's laptop this morning and everything's fine but then I logged on now, and everything's gone! Everything! All his documents and folders and so on and I even had to re-install his internet connection thingy. I've done the whole switching on and off thing but nothing's worked. He's coming home in two days and I'm screwed if I've destroyed his computer. Why oh why has this happened? The weird thing is that I downloaded the AVG virus scanner a few weeks ago and that's still here but stuff like messenger and other programs aren't. Any ideas? He uses Windows 98. Help!

First a question ...Is the desktop being viewed as a Web Page?

If so, right click on the desktop, properties, Effects tab and see if the option
    "Hide Icons ...." is selected.

My friend just asked me this but no it's not, it's just normal.
Even Windows Media Player is acting like it's just been installed.

Who did you log on as ...can you log on as administrator ...or better yet as your dad?

yes...which is why it's worrying that I can't do anything. He only really has one user name anyway and that's his.

Can you get into safe mode?

Registry Checker—Comes with Windows 98. It's the best program to use for automatically backing up and restoring the Registry and for fixing the most common problems with the Registry.
    Registry Checker
Registry Checker comes with Windows 98. Finally, Microsoft ships a useful Registry program with the operating system! This program fulfills the following purposes:
Backs up and restores the Registry
Scans and fixes a variety of Registry errors
Optimizes unused space in the Registry
The best part about Registry Checker is that it largely does its own thing. Windows 98 starts Registry Checker every time you boot the operating system. Registry Checker then backs up the Registry to CAB files (compressed archive files) that you find in C:\Windows\Sysbckup. It also scans the Registry for errors. If it finds any, Windows 98 restarts the computer in MS-DOS mode and runs Registry Checker to restore a good backup copy of the Registry automatically or to fix those errors.
    REGCLEAN

REGCLEAN is a freeware utility from Microsoft that repairs a number of problems that are common to Microsoft products. This utility isn't nearly as useful as Norton WinDoctor, but it serves the needs of many users.

no I can't get into safe mode, I've tried doing the F8 thing when the laptop's starting up but it doesn't work. You think I should run this regclean thing then I guess? It won't screw up the computer even more will it if anything goes wrong?

I can get into safe mode actually and I've just tried restoring the registry to and earlier date when things were fine but it didn't work.
