when you come into work to find out you have been released from your contract.

Despite preparing for this, it is still quite the shock to the system. Time to find another job....

    Damn.

Sorry to hear that! Did you know it was going to be soon and were just surprised at how soon? Have any leads on anything?

I had an inkling. The other company (not the one I worked for) didn't like me much and they had the power to flip the kill switch, even if not my employer.
They literally would not return my calls, emails, IMs. They hired people for a job I could do rather than include me on tasks.

No leads, other than jobs 2+ hours away.

I signed up with TEKSystems several months ago and didn't get a single bite. I've been refining my resume for the last month knowing this day was nearing.

Good luck Adry! I am sure you will find something better. The last time I got fired was by E-mail on my day off. :-D

Takes some skill to get fired on your day off.

Sorry to hear your bad news Adry :(
I hope things go well for finding a new job as the good jobs are always hard to get. A good resumé is very important so it is great that you had the foresight to start revising it early rather than wait until it is too late. :cool
Good luck and best wishes :wave

With all the time you spent with me a couple of days ago (bluray and ps3 recommendations) had I known what you were going through, I wouldn't have taken up so much of your time.

I hope your situation is just a small bump in your road and you bounce back stronger than ever.

Darn Adry, so sorry to hear about that. :(

You're so highly skilled that it shouldn't be a problem getting a new job. I wish you good luck in finding a new one sooner rather than later.

Honestly, it was sudden. I knew the end was nigh, but I figured I would hear a couple weeks in advance as I don't get benefits and cannot collect unemployment.

I walked into work yesterday, boss came up to me and had been told that very morning to let me go. It was all very political and nothing I had done wrong. I don't blame my boss, the order came from somewhere else.

Thank you for the kind words. The biggest issue right now is that a lot of the jobs available are 2 hours away and I have a little girl who is not wanting her dad to live somewhere else during the work week.

I have some sympathy for you, BUT get up off your *** and do something about it, I was in the same position many years ago, I had no skills, secondary education no qualifications, so I started my own business, and I never looked back.
What part of the world are you?, It seems you can sort out computer problems, so advertise the fact, you must have local newspapers or monthly mags in your area, put up flyers in fast food takeaways or anywhere the public use. If you live in the UK and could repair reel to reel tape recorders I could find you some work. Just get a grip man.
The best thing about working for yourself is that no prat can fire you, besides the fact that you pay less tax.
    All the best Wal :-D;)

Get off my ***? Really? It happened yesterday afternoon. Between that and my wife's car accident last night, I don't really think that was appropriate. I haven't exactly been idle.

She seems to be fine, thanks. She is more ticked off that her new car is damaged.

Don't get so humpy my friend, you just sit in front of your computer, something may turn up, you wont get any sympathy from me.
    Good luck.

  21. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

Now that I have cooled off some, let me reword my response.

    To be clear:

You won't give me sympathy because:

    1. I need to get off my *** because I haven't found a job from the one I was released from 23 hours ago.
    2. I need to get off my *** despite me running errands for my wife who was in a car accident yesterday.
    3. I need to get off my *** despite the fact that I took my daughter to school today and helped her with her schoolwork before class.
    4. I am sitting in front of a computer, despite the fact that I am a programmer and my computer is what makes me money.
    5. I am polishing and revising my resume and sending it out to companies.
    6. I am arranging for my school loans to be deferred due to my loss of employment.

Of course, I never asked for sympathy.

So, pray tell, what should I be doing as an IT professional?

Well I didn't realize how you must be struggling to bring up your daughter, It must be very difficult for you, after all I only had 4 to bring up and support even after they married, plus a mortgage as well, I suppose I must be one of the lucky ones, anyway best of luck.

    Passive-aggressive much?

None of anything you said has any relevance to what is going on here. Where did I say I was struggling? I merely explained that I wasn't sitting on my *** like you proclaimed. So the only thing you could latch onto was that one point?

    Sad.

I have an idea. Maybe stop posting attacks towards me and give civil advice, or get lost.

I have no idea what chip you have on your shoulder, but I would suggest you don't post one more response in this thread. Your replies are offensive.

(hint: I would Really suggest you bow out of this thread)

  31. Caliban

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

Very nice - well done. You are obviously in the top technical tier (alliteravely speaking - ;)). The only thing I can suggest is to at least offer the ability to see a somewhat personal side of yourself. Broad strokes - nothing vital, but when I was in hiring mode I wanted to see if the qualifications were backed up by a flesh-and-blood human, or at least the capacity or opportunity if I felt like taking your resume to the next level. Maybe a discrete link (apologies if I've missed one). Something to think about.

Another one - references: alert anyone you list. Grill them on any fine points that you want a prospective employer to hear.

You could also point to certain MG threads (or any other support forums) for experience ammunition (haven't thought that one all the way through - there may or may not be traps there).

Before you decide you can't collect unemployment, read this:

    http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p1779.pdf

Even if you signed an Independent Contractor agreement, there are still things the company/employer may have made you do that cross the line on being an "employee." Examples include:

    * Did the company make you work on a specific schedule? This includes mandatory meetings, whether you were paid or not to attend them.

    * Did they pay for any training while you were there?

I went through this a few years ago. I was "hired" for an IT position, only to have an Independent Contractor agreement thrust in front of me on the first day of work. Long story short, after three months of cleaning up other people's messes, I was let go in favor of a "buddy" of the owner.

In my case, I was forced to attend management meetings at least 2-3 times per week and was sent out of state for a week of software training at the company's expense (air and lodging pre-paid by the company). Although the company put up a stink, the Texas Workforce Commission agreed I met the legal definition of an "employee" and I was awarded unemployment benefits.

Read the IRS rules (above) and search your state's unemployment website (they may have even stricter rules that favor you). When you file, present as much evidence to the Unemployment Office that favors your status as an "employee." You have nothing to lose by trying.

Good luck on your job search. I hope this helps.

  34. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

I will check it out, thanks.

As for those two examples, I was given a requested schedule but never forced to work it. I was always asked if I could work at a certain time.

I had no training either, LOL. I was tossed into the fire, so to speak.

One suggestion from me Adry. On the resume part of your link, the light blue color text is distracting to me. It distracts me and makes me not want to read it, if that makes any sense. Now, I am not a pro resume builder, but I do work with photos and signs all day. On the other pages on your link, the blue text looks fine.

24 hours, and you don't have 5 jobs lined up? Slacker. :-D:-D

  36. Mimsy

Mimsy Superior Imperial Queen of the MG Games Forum

Because they're not white. Suggestion: Make the light blue text a grayish darker blue, that doesn't stand out so much against the white background and the black content text. Less eye strain, and will look smoother and more professional as well. :)

And good luck with your job search! You'll find something, it's only a matter of time. Hopefully short time.

  37. Fred_G

Dark blue might work as well. Or a bold black? Will leave the color selection in other's hands.

  38. Mimsy

Mimsy Superior Imperial Queen of the MG Games Forum

Bold black might work very well, and may be more printer friendly as well. Font and layout are great though, leave them as they are.

(I'm not a professional resume builder either. I just get to read them before I walk in with the rest of the group to interview the ones who sent us their resumes. :) )

I thought the layout was great also. The link to the spotted owl shooting was not a good thing. :-D:-D

  40. dyamond

Geez that sucks, I know that feeling but I know you are very smart and very capable, and should have companies fawning over you in no time (or should I say in 12 hours from now, or is that still being too lazy? ;) )

I eyeballed your resume and while I'm not the resume expert, I have a few suggestions.

    1. Expand, expand, expand! Don't make your resume too wordy (get rid of extraneous words, for example; in your first listing it says " Assisted in helping testing team..." change that to, " Assisted testing team to...") but list everything, I mean everything you did at each job. If it was your job to take out trash each day, write you took out the trash, no matter how menial. I've had several interviewers comment on how they love that my resume is so descriptive and to the point.

    2. It sounds stupid but buzz words work; team player, dedication, multitasker, etc, etc, pick ones that fit your profile.

    3. Sell yourself! Tell the company not only what you can do but what you can bring them. I don't have to tell you that the bottom dollar is#1 but companies are very interested to see how if they hire you, you will save them money/make them more money.

    For example:

Well, I hope this helps a little as it's helped me a quite deal! Good luck :)

    I didn't see that one. :-D

Adding to what dyamond was saying, when we interview applicants at my job we look at the personality almost more than anything else. We can teach them the skills they need for the job, but attitude, drive, and mindset are harder to train. So when you go in to interviews, relax and be yourself.

And remember that it's not all about whether they want to hire you, you also want to learn about them so you can decide if you want to work there. Do you really want these people to be your bosses? Over the long term, that matters.

  42. Fred_G

    Well, I'd need to pick a different stick . . .

  44. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

Well, the reason I chose that color is because at some point I want to become a mobile developer, concentrating mainly (but not solely) on Android. The colors on the site (sans the background of the other pages) uses colors from Google's design guidelines, so I found it fitting. I suspect that my resume will likely make it to most hands in doc or PDF form. Maybe what I will do is build a theme chooser into it and default it to a more neutral color :)

The site also serves as my test platform for learning asp.net. While it is mostly HTML and CSS, every page on the site has C# code running on the backend for different functions. On the first page, it runs the previews for projects I have done, the second (under constructions still) does the image slideshow, and the third handles the resume downloads.

Thank you for the advice :)

I did not intend to upset you, just wanted to give you a shove because I know how depressing unemployment can be, and to point out the opportunity to do other things. I'm glad I never had to suck up to some spotty kid you give me a job, but things have changed since I was a lad.
