Hiya everyone, Your gonna have to bare with me here, my tech knowledge is abit out of date.

Just recently bought a P4 3.0 prescott running on an abit ic7-G board. Antec case with 2x120mm Fans (only one running at present) and Aero 4 heatsink and a 5950 ultra cooking away.

My normal cpu temp is 53C and full load seems to be about 63C according to motherboard monitor when running 3dmark on loop.

What sort of temps should i be getting, I never tried the cpu with the stock heatsink so I'm not sure if the Aero 4 is up to the job.

Cheers for any help u can offer

that happens to me with my server in my room!

wow, thats pretty hot, you might wanna clean out your case with canned air... if it is a store bought 1 and no changes have been made to it, might wanna call HP... ask them whats up... hope it helps

It's actually quite normal for a prescott to get that hot. I wouldn't worry too much about it as long as it's not overclocked.

BTW, what heatsink compound did you use? If you used the white goop that came with the aero 4, i recommend you clean it off and put arctic silver 5 in it instead; good stuff:)

Yes, either AS 5 or Ceramique (which i think is easier to apply IMO). Aero is a good cooler, but thats a fairly good temp for a prescott.

Cheers guys, i solved my prob, that coolermaster goop was a pile of steamy dog poo, artic silver 5 sorted it out.

Also got an e-mail from Intel and they told me that the maximum operating temp of the P4 3E is 69.1, i think i can definately say i've burnt my new chip in.

ever since summer has come i cant run any games on my P4 3E with stock heatsink because the temp always goes up to 69 C and i get the temperature warning. even at idle my prescott is running at about 56-58C. so u can imagine what will happen with load. this is with an air conditioner on in the room. i havent even tried running the comp w/o ac. anyway does it mean i have to get rid of the stock cooling n get some after market cooler. i cant spend too much money on cooling e.g. water cooling so plz dont tell me i need that :(

currently i have P4 Prescott 3 GHZ with stock cooling on INTEL 875PBZ with one case fan and one power supply fan in an HT Casing. oh n there is one on the geforce ti4200 too :)

    What options do i have

if you want, you can try liquid cooling. ive had no problems with my prescott on my home network machine, the one im on now. it runs at about 30 c the one problem is leaky plumbing though. if your pipe bursts, then there goes your mobo and processor. its still a good option if you want to run that risk, or you could run a duct from your a/c to the back of your comp and into a vent so it runs through the computer like a nice cool breeze.

    very ambitious methods slipstream :)

but i was asking for alternatives to those two

You sure the heatsink is on correctly? And that you've applied some proper thermal paste? (AS is good). Stock heatsink should cool sufficiently for normal use.

also StingeR as well as what Goldy said above, positioning of the case fans are crutial to good airflow and as well as that to help the flow of air over the parts the inside cables shouldnt look like a bowl of spagetti exploded,

    not a bad guide ( with pics ) http://www.viperlair.com/articles/retired/int_antec.shtml

good rule of thumb in positioning fans is lower front case fan sucking in air, back fans near top ( including PSU fan ) expelling air...

what case you have and if it can accomodate one or two more fans then that would be the cheapest option to add more cooling to your PC?

    I'm running a P4 2.8E at 3.11 right now (211Mhz),
In Jeantech phong case (two 120mm fans) and Jeantech 450W psu with 120mm fan also.

I'm using arctic silver 5, and the RS-94 heatsink with 92mm fan, which has a funnel from the side of the case so the air it draws in is from the cooler air in my room, instead of the warm air in the case.

It's running at 40-42 C idle, and 51-52 under load (the temperature torture test in prime 95). And this is it OC'd to 3.11 from 2.8. I *would* run the Mhz from 222 all the way to say 235-240, but my RAM can't seem to cope, and fails in the prime95 check that uses lots of ram (the cpu still passes, and runs only maybe 4-5 degrees warmer than now, despite being at around 2.3-2.4GHz).

My question is, do you think copper ram coolers might help the ram cope better when the processor is running at higher speeds? (I've tried upping voltage - it increases stability a little bit, but only so that prime 95's ram testing goes for 2 mins instead of 1 before an error ^^; )

btw, my CPU ran rpm is about 1920 at most times, and I don't have readings for my front and rear chassis fans, but they produce only a low hum.

Check Halo's post if you didnt already.

I got P4 3.E (Retail using stock heatsink and fan, stock thermal pad) Gigabyte mobo, room temp averages 72 - 74 degrees F, at Idel I'm 36c, underload never seen over 54c, motherboard 25c ( temps using Everast) running at stock speeds no OC.

I just replaced power supply with Antec true 430, my max temps for cpu underload havent went over 49c sinse, wasnt expecting that 5c improvement!

I have two fans on bottom of case near the front, one on the lower front of case, and one on the side window blowing in. (total 4 blowing in filtered air, two of which blow air across my SATA HDD)
Then on the rear of my case two fans blowing out, the PS has two fans blowing out too,(total 4 blowing out)

My case is generic with side window & some blue lights, I did alittle customizing, more fan holes & remove excess metal from existing ones.
I also made a base for my case to accomadate those fans on the bottom & air filter's.
All cables and wires neatly tucked to provide maxium air flow.

    Nice temps Asus :)

I've just managed a similar 5 C drop, after upping my cpu fan rev by about 130-140 to between 2000 and 2080rpm (strangely enough, increasing the rpm further doesn't really have anything like the same impact on temps: running another 250 rpm faster doesn't push temps much more than 1 C lower. . . perhaps the heatsink or fan has reached its most efficient at the rpm I'm running at now?), and my idle temp is now about 37-38, remember, this is OC'd to 3.11 from 2.8 as well . . . I'm slightly proud of myself for managing this through simple air cooling, yet keeping the system nice and quiet indeed.

Any day now, my copper ram heatsinks will come through. . . hopefully the few degrees cooler they'll be running at will allow me to get a slightly higher OC than what I've got, and stilll keep the stability. Right now prime 95 can run as long as it wants, no errors, but as soon as I push the core about 5Mhz faster, the 'most ram usage' torture test throws up an error, wheras the 'most CPU usage test' still gets no errors. Temperature at 3.5Ghz is maybe only a few C higher than what I'm at now, so it's really only the RAM that's holding me back.
