    Hi-

About a year ago, I added an additional hard drive to my computer, as I was experiencing major space issues. Unbeknownst to me, my husband then decided it'd be a good idea to "cut" and "paste" software programs from the C:/Program Files folder to the new F:/Program Files folder.

ITunes and Quicktime were not huge fans of this husbandly transfer. I upgraded ITunes, which refuses to work, as it needs a newer version of Quicktime (7.0 or higher). So, I downloaded and attempted to install a newer version of Quicktime (without iTunes), and that didn't work, either.

    Here's how it goes:

    1. Try to start Itunes, get this error message:

Quicktime Version 6.5.2 is installed. ITunes requires Quicktime version 7.0.3 or higher. Please reinstall iTunes.

    2. Reinstall Itunes+Quicktime combo (7.0.1.3) to F:/Program Files folder, which gets about 1/3 way through, and I get this error message:

    Could Not Open Key
H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\QuickTime. Verify that you have sufficient access to the key or contact your support personnel.

    3. So, then, I think: "Ha! I will just install Quicktime (7.1.3) by itself" to the to F:/Program Files folder. Yeah, that didn't work, either. The same error message came up:

    Could Not Open Key
H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\QuickTime. Verify that you have sufficient access to the key or contact your support personnel.

So, before I throw my computer AND my husband out the window, could somebody please help? I miss my music!

    Thanks!

First question. Are ye running an administrator priveledge account? If not, then you need to be. If so....

Have you tried uninstalling, then reinstalling?

Have you tried, cutting the old folder back into the original folder location?

Have you ran CCleaner, then re-installing the new version of iTunes?

    Thanks for your response!

    > First question. Are ye running an administrator priveledge account?

    Yes.

    > Have you tried uninstalling, then reinstalling?

Neither QuickTime nor Itunes shows up in the list of Add/Remove programs (I'm not sure why). And there is no "uninstall" option for either one.

QuickTime is in the C:\Program Files folder and iTunes is in the F:\Program Files folder. Is simply deleting the entire folder containing these files a good way to safely uninstall these without using Add/Remove programs?

    > Have you tried, cutting the old folder back into the original folder location?

Yes, and unfortunately, it didn't work.

    > Have you ran CCleaner, then re-installing the new version of iTunes?

I will definitely try this once I get the programs uninstalled...

theefool was trying to tell you to run CCleaner as that program will clean out any old files in your registry if you click on the "Issues" tab, always say yes to the Back-up box, this may get rid of any stray Itunes/Quicktime files left in your registry, the you can reinstall them. Having had the same problem, you can try this but in my case I had to use a stronger Registry tool and eliminate ALL registry entries for iTunes/Quicktime before I got a good new install. hope that helps

I DID IT! Thanks to the help of two major geeks!

    Here's how:

    1. Ran CC cleaner and uninstalled all versions of Quicktime and iTunes.
    2. This left one version of Quicktime (somehow undetected), so I ran a search on my two hard drives, and deleted all references to Quicktime (the good old fashioned way).
    3. Ran CC cleaner again -- (issues).
    4. Reinstalled Quicktime (new version)
    5. Reinstalled iTunes (new version)

YAY! Thank you, BCGray and Theefool! :)
