iTunes help

I copied music and put on my external hard drive. After reading some stuff on the internet I see that in iTunes, under preferences, there is a checkbox to “Keep iTunes Music folder organized” – and they recommend having that checked prior to moving music to external hard drive. I did not check that prior to moving and now without getting into too much detail it would be a pain for me to re-copy and move to my hard drive.

So – if I delete all my music on my computer and have it on my external without that box being checked – is it going to be a mess? I am very hesitant to delete all my music without knowing for sure that the external hard drive has it in good and easy to use order. But I really have to delete soon because my computer is close to full.

If it's on the external drive then it's safe.

You can check that box if iTunes knows that the default location for music is on that drive, in the designated folder. However, the only flaw with this is that the external drive will have to be connected and turned on whenever you have iTunes open otherwise it won't like it!

I have this option turned on, simply because iTunes does a good job with sorting music (I'm too lazy to do it too!). It's entirely up to you, if you'd like it organised on the external drive then check the box, if you'd rather do it yourself then keep it unchecked.

If I was in your position, I'd set iTunes to have your external drive as the default location but uncheck the box.
