    I have an Ipod mini.
My old computer took a flying crap, and now I've bought a new computer, which means that I will have to install Itunes on the new one. Since all my music files were on the old computer, they are in computer Hades now, and completely inaccessible. Once I have installed Itunes on the new computer, there will be NO music files. I know that when I connect my Ipod to the computer, Itunes updates the Ipod to match what is on Itunes. So, if I connect my Ipod (with 1500 songs on it) to the new computer, and there is nothing on Itunes, wont that wipe out my Ipod? How can I get all my music files FROM the Ipod TO the new computer? I dont have hardcopy backups of alot of my mp3's and it was a lot of work digging around on the net to find these mp3's, Im scared of losing all those files and thus waste lots of time and effort collecting them. Of course, being a first class DILLWAD, I dont have the manual that came with my Ipod, so I cant check that to see if theres any information on this issue.

im by far no expert, but have an ipod since xmas (still getting to know it) and from what I can read in the manual, you cannnot transfer music

    FROM IPOD TO PUTER

    only

    PUTER TO IPOD

unfortunantly i think your out of luck, unless of course you purchased the music from Itunes, then you can just re-download all the purchased music to the new puter at no charge but it sounds like most of the mp3s might not be from itunes...

to keep from whiping out your IPOD though, go into your preferences in Itunes before you connect your IPOD and turn off automatic updates, this will enable manual updates and when you connect ipod, it will do nothing more than recognize the drive. if u want to transfer music at this point you must drag and drop to the ipod.

can i ask did Itunes have anything to do with your old puter taking a puke?

before i got new puter, i had itunes on it and was just having problems on a daily basis so when i got my new puter i kept itunes on old so as to not mess with my nice new system. still have problems with the old one but im sure its virus ridden and whatnot even though i reinstalled it to factory settings..

im just wondering how many run itunes on their daily puter and does it mess with / interfere or get in the way at all?

im actually quite mad at apple / itunes as i had an old aol account which i cancelled but had itunes through aol, now since getting rid of aol, i had to establish a new apple account and they will not transfer hundreds of songs that i had under the old account - so i may just dump this 40gb on ebay and go with another mp3 player and maybe do napster for 15 a month...

No, Im 99.99% certain that Itunes had nothing to do with the computer dying. It was a hardware problem that killed the computer. I never had any problems with Itunes. The website that GOLDFISH recommended has some excellent solutions to the problem I am having (thanks GOLDFISH!) and as soon as I get the cable internet installed in my new apartment, and my computer up, thats one of the first things I am going to do, try one of the programs offered on that site. This should be on Wednesday night. I will report back here with the results! ;)
Oh yeah- the other responders to my initial question also offered some worthwhile sites to try for help (didnt want to leave you guys out!) (sosaman and just playin)

    Update: Process Stalled By Roadrunner

I was supposed to have Roadrunner installed in the apartment I just moved to.
(stay with me here, this IS relevant) When the tech got to the apartment to do the installation, he discovered that the work order had the wrong address on it. When he called dispatch to have it corrected, he was told that a new work order would have to be issued, and that he would not get paid if he did the job right then. So he freakin' left. Without doing the job. Needless to say, I was a bit "upset" that, due to someone else's mistake, I was getting screwed out of my hookup. I got on the phone with TimeWarner, and was transferred 5 times, and had to tell the story to 5 different people. I was then told that they would have to send out a "Service Ability" check, which would take 8 days, and then I would have to reschedule a connection call (another 3 to 5 days). This was unacceptable. Finally I asked for a supervisor, and then I was on hold for 35 minutes straight. When i got a supervisor on the phone, I told her what bullshit this whole situation is and that I had taken the afternoon off work to handle this (outright lie) and not only did i not get the job done but now Im out a day's pay and that she needed to fix this. So she emailed someone, bypassed the 8 days wait, and now ill be connected (allegedly) on Tuesday coming, with a twenty dollar credit on my first month.
Therefore, I have not been able to get the program(s) and do the I-tunes upload.
A soon as I get that done, as promised, I will post the results.
    Stay tuned if you're interested.

Is your hard drive from your old PC still usable?

If so, why not fit it to your new PC as a slave drive and transfer tunes from old HD to new HD, or better still, just leave it in your new PC and store all new tunes on it, keeping new hard drive free of music.

You may have to set jumpers on the old HD, or new motherboard, to recognise old HD as a slave. May have to get BIOS to recognise that a second HD is fitted, as well. None of this is really difficult if you take your time or get some assistance, if needed. Let us know if you have any problems with this and we can assist further. Bazza

    Problem Solved!

    Okey Dokey!

    Thanks for your suggestions.
    I used Podutil from : http://www.kennettnet.co.uk/software/podutil.php
And it worked fine, aside from the program hanging at the end of the procedure, and annoying popups requesting donations throughout the copy process.
It was fairly painless, and Im good to go now!
