    This is simply not on.

I wrote an article in my blog a while ago about running home servers. Which is here:
    http://www.goldfishsbowl.co.uk/index.php?p=61&page=1

Now. when doing a google earlier, I found this site under "how to setup a webserver".

    http://www.webhosters.com/c/a/Web-Hosting-HowTos/Hosting-From-Home-for-Fun-and-Profit-Prerequisites-Hardware-and-Network/
    http://www.webhosters.com/c/a/Web-Hosting-HowTos/Home-Web-Servers-Part-2-Software-and-Maintenance/

Take a read of my post, and then those two articles on webhosters.com.

I think what takes the biscuit is they use the exact same examples as I did.
Coincidence that they just so HAPPENED to mention a Dual Xeon setup with more than a GB of ram AND a PII with 64MB of ram AND a PIII with over 128MB of ram?

Not to mention the fact they guaged what hardware you need in exactly the same way (in reference to static pages/non-scripted).

And they also used a list in the exact same context as I did.

Am I just over-reacting? It seems spookily similar... and I can say totally honestly I constructed that article purely through personal experience and (cited) sources such as .net magazine.

don't know, I'd say it's pretty much the same, however they've rewritten it in such a way that they could easily claim it to be their own work.

That sucks!!!!!! I mean if you want to use someone's info and it's accessible on the web just set up a link. Don't ace the test by CHEATING!!!

Whats even more lame is it looks like they edited the datestamp so it looks like they submitted it 3 days before me. What are the chances of two people in completley different parts of the world submitting an article virutually identical in terms of underlying points in the space of 3 days?

Unless they are planning to try and get me for copying them....

To me this is exactly copying somthing off an encyclopedia and re-wording it and handing it in instead of an essay.

    Changed ;)

What am I supposed to do about it though? Do I need to send an email off to someone?

Oh and if people could take a look and look for similarities, or more to the point differences in the articles. The second one is more of their own work, but still contains quite a lot of mine (such as the info about Linux)

e-mail the webmaster, tell them you don't like being copied (of course, be courteous ;))

no need, the article looks very much like yours and you were earlier with it then they were, they should either change it or take it offline.

I would say so... I mean, they will understand and have the same thoughts you do.

Okay, have a look at my email to the author :)

    Hi,

I have reason to belive that you may have used my blog entry ( http://www.goldfishsbowl.co.uk/index.php?p=61 ) as a source when writing your guides on setting up a Home Server on webhosters.com.

Take the first 3 paragraphs of your first article, Hosting (From Home) for Fun and Profit: Prerequisites, Hardware, and Network http://www.webhosters.com/c/a/Web-Hosting-HowTos/Hosting-From-Home-for-Fun-and-Profit-Prerequisites-Hardware-and-Network/and then the first three paragraphs of my article
How to run your own Home Server - Part 1 http://www.goldfishsbowl.co.uk/index.php?p=61

Notice that there are underlying points that are essentially the same.
    - Learning how to administrate a server
    - Control over hosting
    - Using your broadband connection for dual purposes.
    - Reduced costs

And then, on my second page...
    - The hardware might be "bodged up" or not "enterprise class"
    - bandwidth issues
    - ISP rules (which in your article is not addressed until the Network/ ISP section

Also, on the second page of your first article (prequisites) you use a list in an almost idential context to my article on page 3.

On the hardware page, you also use almost the exact same hardware examples for CPU's and RAM.
    For example:
    Goldfishsbowl.co.uk
Of course, the next thing you want to think about is the hardware. I ran my websites on a PIII 700Mhz with 512MB of ram for the longest time last year. It performed respectably, but it couldn’t handle the extremes my stress tests threw at it. Obviously, you will want to get the best server hardware you can possibly get, Dual Xeon’s, 8 Disk RAID arrays, gigabytes of RAM and the like, but it really isn’t necessary.
To put this into perspective, deliaonline.com uses 6 servers: two load balanced web servers (PIII 1.26 GHz), a SQL server cluster of 2 machines (900Mhz Xeon) with a fiber channel RAID array. They run a bandwidth of 160GB per month, working out of an average speed of 56Kb per second. (.net Web Builder issue 129, P39).

A realistic minimum for a home server would be a PIII (or Duron equivalent) or above processor , and at least 128MB of ram. PC133 RAM is cheap as dirt these days, so upgrading that shouldn’t be a problem, as long as your motherboard will support it. I’d get the latest BIOS for the board too.

Hard disk space really is your own choice. How much do you want to store on there? As long as it isn’t cripplingly small, it doesn’t really matter. A guideline value from me would be about 5GB minimum.
    ....
I’ll admit, I have run a UT Classic server on a PII (266Mhz) before with 32MB of ram, but it wasn’t pretty. Lag was diabolical. Serving web pages wasn’t much better, but then it was running Windows 2000 (just).

    webhosters.com
The first thing you will need to do is find a computer that will act as your server. This could be anything from a Pentium 2 with 64 megabytes of RAM to a dual CPU Xeon with 2 gigabytes of RAM, depending on how much active content and how much traffic your server will get. For example, if your server will mostly be serving static pages with little or no active (scripted) content, few images, and relatively low traffic, a system on the low end of this spectrum will be sufficient (Pentium II or III with 128 to 256 megabytes of RAM). However, if you want to serve multiple domains with a lot of database and active or scripted content you will want a faster server (not necessarily the dual Xeon mentioned above, but definitely Pentium III or IV with 256-512 megabytes of RAM).
Another important aspect to decide early is how much hard drive space the intended applications will require. If you want to run an FTP server for you and your friends to swap MP3 and movie files, you’ll want a large amount of hard drive space.

The Dual Xeons, PII with 64MB of ram, PIII with 128MB-256MB.

Finally, both articles were submitted within the same week. You see why I have reason to be suspicious?

Do you think you could clarify this, or at least assure me this was a very bizzarre coincidence?

    Regards...

You need to write the ISP for help -- But in this case your odds aren;t very good since it happens to be Neucom, Inc.

    I found this on them
    -----

Large adult-hosting service with ties to C2Media/LOP.COM - hosts part of them. Their full listing is 216.143.120.0 with a mask of 255.255.252.0. However, only the top half (.122.0 and above) appears to be in use.

    64.157.0.0 255.255.252.0 Neucom, Inc.
    64.159.64.0 255.255.224.0 Neucom, Inc.
64.159.92.0 255.255.252.0 Neucom, Inc. Duplicate of EZCyberSearch/Neucom rule above
    66.230.192.0 255.255.192.0 Neucom, Inc.
    64.157.8.0 255.255.240.0 Neucom, Inc.
    64.158.28.0 255.255.252.0 Neucom, Inc.
    67.29.164.0 255.255.255.0 Neucom, Inc.
    64.158.164.0 255.255.252.0 Neucom, Inc.
    64.158.76.0 255.255.252.0 Neucom, Inc.
This is where ezCyberSearch runs off as well as parts of Xupiter. It is a haven of spam, adult, gambling, and get-rich-quick sites as well as redirectors to them, perhaps the largest U.S.-based one on the Internet. If you want to disable access to these sites as well, do not use the ezCyberSearch.com filter above, use all these. Runs off of Level3. (Note last 6 addresses courtest of Spamhaus' SBL. To learn more about Level3 and its extreme contribution to the spam problem, visit http://www.spamhaus.org/sbl/listings.lasso?isp=level3.net&-nothing=Search).

    __

Which is bad sign for getting help.
