Ok, everyone pretty much knows that I'm looking for a job but I have a question regarding my resume and how to answer a specific question.

On my resume, I was let go of 2 positions.
The 1st one because I fell on their property and need surgery and they knew I would be out for a while so they fired me 3 days before my surgery.
The 2nd was b/c a girl that had worked at the center for a really long time wanted her friend to have my job so (Im sure she talked him into they were "friends") so the boss fired me and dont ya know the next day the girl's friend had my job rolleyes

Now I know Im not supposed to talk bad about the company and tell them what actually happened but how do I answer when they ask why I was let go without making myself or the companies sound irresponsible??

    Thanksss :)

Let's see, in corporate speak you left the first job because of gaps in health care coverage. And the second you were let go so the position could be filled by an "office favorite".
Make little quote marks in the air when you say office favorite and then vaguely trail off.
Then launch into why you are the person for this job. :p

I don't have any answers for you but as for the first dismissal, it is unlawful.

I don't believe that is legal. I know you're not allowed to lay someone off and then fill the spot with someone else. Maybe since you were let go, it's different.. I'd contact the employer and ask how they'd like it conveyed to prospective new companies.. I'm not too bashful about anything though. ;)

Good Luck. I wish we'd get rid of a few people here...

PA is an at will state meaning any employer can fire you for any reason at any time and it was before my 90 probationary period (1 day to be exact) so they really dont have to give a reason then.

@ darlene - it is unlawful but if I were to take them to court I would have had a heck of a time proving it.

I think I see if wal-mart needs any cart chasers, they'll hire anyone :D

It shouldn't be a court matter. California has a Labor Board and simply the fact of being laid off within a period of time of being sick, giving birth, surgery would be a reason enough. On the other hand though I have heard of people who's employers were forced to reinstate them only to be let go again after a time.
Don't know what to tell you about your resume. Being a florist, you apply for a job by doing arrangements. It has always been an unstable business so letting someone go means the money season was over. Good Luck to you

Was talking to Dan and he reminded me it isn't all about getting the job back, they have to pay you for lost wages, so might be worth looking into that aspect of it. An example of a state here, not sure where you are but would imagine all states have one.

you answered your 1st question right there...The company only had x amount of position(s) to fill (after the 90 days) and there were y amount of people being considered for that job.

for the other reason, what do you think the reason would be if a prospective company called that one for a reference? try to keep the reasons in-line with those, cause they do call old employers.

Don't know how many jobs you have had in total but think about this.

    Look forward, not back.
Try to get temp job, perhaps from an agency. It shows you can hold down a position. that's good. It shows you are not sitting about waiting for the work to come to you. It gives you something to brag about. Then you CV may look something like this.

Last job - Reason for leaving - End of successful contract. (even if it's only 4 days long)

Previous job - Reason for leaving - 'Reorganisation, the replacement post in new structure can be handled by someone with lower capabilities (?qualifications) than myself'.

Previous job - Reason for leaving - Temporary incapacity due to accident, but that was a while ago and I've been fine since.

A few years ago when i was an employer i would vet the CVs and pick what i thought to be the best but i would then make a decision based on the interview.

i would not employ any body who did not turn up in a presentable state (first impressions and all that, at least make an effort) you would be surprised at the condition some of the prospective employees have arrived for the interview!

Then i would listen to them as they detailed previous employment and always preferred the truth about reasons for leaving a previous job.

Every employer has his/her own little foibles so a certain amount of luck is required.

But as for the CV Studiot has given you a perfect way to lay it out and then at the interview you will have a better chance to explain the situation.

GOOD LUCK in finding a new position.

I've interviewed loads of people. I always look for straightforward, unapologetic honesty. If someone said they were fluent in french, I'd ask them to translate a document. If they said they worked in accounting, I'd ask them a really specific book keeping or tax question. I also usually asked everyone to hand me something or pick up something just to see if they had a can do, team playing attitude. The guy who winced at picking up the garbage pail or felt putting a fresh roll of tp in the bathroom was beneath him lost his cred w/ me. The ones who had character building work experience, looked me right in the eye and seemed able and willing to do whatever needed to be done got hired every time. remember that you are interviewing them too. be decent and demonstrate a sense of work ethic. If the company is well managed, they'll recognize a good worker and hire you. If you regard the interview as anything but a genuine meeting of minds, it'll disappoint, sooner or later.
be yourself, but be your best self. remember that after you get hired, you are there to do a job and do it well. never lose focus of that.

That, right there, is the key. You need something on the CV that will not affect your chances of getting to the interview, but that is completely truthful, and that you can elaborate on while you are there, face to face with the interviewer, who by then will have a favorable opinion of you and will be inclined to give you the benefit of doubt and hear you out.

Remember, studies have shown that an interviewer makes his/her decision within the first 15 seconds of the interview, and the rest of the time they spend justifying that decision. So if you can make a good first impression, you are more than half-way there.

And dyamond, I love, love, love your new avatar! I want that on a t-shirt! :drool
