... and they are either too slow to load, or can't connect to Major Geeks.:cry

Yet when I use Internet Explorer 6 it connects to Major Geeks in a few seconds.:)

I must have a setting somewhere that is clashing with these new Browsers.
I don't want to make them my default Browser, as yet, until I am happy using one of them.

I have run CCleaner, each time, or nearly each time after uninstalling them.
I have run Cleanup! and Advanced Windows Care sometimes, as well, to clear out any residue like dead Registry entries, etc.

Any bright ideas on what settings may be causing this?
Or point me in the direction as to what I might be doing wrong.confused

I've installed them in my "Testing" directory, as I am testing only.;)
I try to keep as much as possible out of C:\Program Files. Just a personal preference of mine.

    I need help. :eek::cry:( Bazza

As far as I know, no outside settings, except from any anti-malware programs you're running, should be doing that. You might need to check the settings on those, and your firewall settings as well, as sometimes they can do things like that, especially with new installs. And, as with many other problems, malware itself could also be a culprit somehow, so if you end up ruling out any setting problems, that may be the next step to take. I can't say what else it could be- I'll have to think and do a little research if it ain't either of those two problems.

Sounds like a good practice to me, I use D:, a larger slave drive, for nonwindows programs, although some will create a folder in Application Data in a users Documents and Settings folder to store information. Makes it easier to see and keep track of what is installed on C:. I haven't had your problem, although USB browsers installed on a flash drive take longer to load (portableapps to name one, Firefox and Opera are two browsers I run from flash drive). I keep IE as default browser as it is still the most used, and because Windows Update uses it, although there is an alternative for Windows Update too. http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/

Thanks guys, for your suggestions. As I have a "double" firewall (don't know what that is yet, on my new Router / Modem, and Broadband), I don't think it is firewall related.

I used to run Zone Alarm Free, with a prevoius router, but am now running without a software firewall.

As for malware, I run many programs daily to clear up the residue after being on the Net.

For example, Cleanup!, Crap Cleaner, Empty Temp Folders, MRU_Blaster, Spybot, Pest Patrol. AdAware (new version), Advanced Windows Care, CWS_Shredder, RootKill program, and A squared fail to pick up anything.

So I'm boxed as to what might be causing my probs, as per post #1. confused Bazza

Same trouble, can't connect to Apple website, but IE6 starts and logs onto the MG frontpage (homepage) in seconds.

Just tried Firefox, to see if that would work. It crashed also (see attachment).

Maybe it's a setting in my Router / Modem, but why does it let IE6 through and not others? confused Bazza

Ok, I think its your router. Its not letting your browser connect. I have no idea what router your useing, but I would check the router home page. I am willing to bet its a configuration issue.

Your browsers may need to be set up to use a proxy. Find out what port ie is useing. Then on the other browser you try, port it to that number. Most browsers I do believe are set no to use a proxy. Thats just about how much I know. Maybe someone else can offer a bit more information. Hope that helps.

Thanks tym. :cool I'm going to have to dig into the modem / router settings.
I've just gone onto Broadband and am still learning.;)

    Modem / Router is a Netgear DG834G 54MBPS (I wish) Wireless ADSL2+.
Package mentions something about "Double Firewall Security", whatever that is. confused

On tym's note, don't most browsers have an auto-detect proxy?

Maybe your Internet Service Provider? Things should go better on broadband I would think. I have a broadband connection through Comcast Cable here in the states. Just picked up on the fact your in Australia, after reading so many of your posts. Just a shot in the dark...Here is a link to a new browser I have been using on and off for the last two months, it uses Internet Explorer like the old AOL Browser does, called The World 2.0
    http://www.ioage.com/en/download.htm
Had to www.dogpile.com to find it again, Google is good, usually...

@bug@ I'll try that AOL type browser. Thanks again.
As a last resort, I'll go to Netgear Techs and bother them. Bazza

i had to do it 4 times(no idea why) but in the end it came good.
this may not be your problem, i hope you find the answer soon.confused

VERY strange...... I have PhaseOut browser config'd as my 'MajorGeeks' browser and it always works great; a tad bit slow maybe 1 in 10 log-on's, but overall it's fine. I think either NetGear or your ISP will hold the solution.... in the meantime, I'll do some research and see what I find... you might try this and see what happens: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259/en-us I've used this in the past to resolve web connection problems..... good luck! If I find anything, I'll post it!

i do hope i dont sound stupid here but i think i read that WORLD BROWSER (i have it ) needs IE7.

i also have SLIM BROWSER its much faster than IE and i easy to customize plus it's quite small.

hope you solve the other problem.http://www.smileyhut.com/angry/blowup.gif

I've experienced some lameness with apps being blocked after uninstalling zone alarm.

Do you have another machine you could try on the router, there, Baz?

If you could successfully connect to the internet using alternate browsers on another machine, that would in one swoop, rule out the router, and ISP. (In fact, I wouldn't have even considered those, as I think they're fairly unlikely to be the problem - just my opinion)

Failing that, installing another NIC into the machine would cause Windows to setup a new, clean section in the registry void of any whack blocking entries caused by a software firewall. You might try that.

I'm fairly certain this has something to do with ZoneAlarm. I'll have a look on their forums for something similar.

Ahh! Seems A LOT of people have similar issues when uninstalling. There are instructions on how to completely uninstall ZoneAlarm.

Thanks guys, but I haven't un-installed Zone Alarm.
I just don't LOAD it when I use Broadband.;)

If the World Browser only uses IE7, then that is that answer to my use of it as I only use IE6.:D

I reset my Modem / Router and am now trying to dig out the appropraite settings, I did save them but they are in a proprietary format (would you believe it) and I have not succeeded in reinstating those settings.(

I am on old faithful AOL dialup again, today.:)

Next step is to contact my ISP and Netgear site, if necessary.

Thanks again for your ideas. :major Bazza

Just curious, what version of router? 1, 2 or 3? Should say on bottom.
    Updated firmware on it?
Have you got a custom level of security on IE6 that is less than the default levels on the other browsers?

  23. Mada_Milty

    Mada_Milty MajorGeek

Ahhh! Then are we absolutely certain we have setup allow rules for other browsers, even if the firewall isn't loaded?

I ask because I've seen some strange behaviour out of ZoneAlarm. I have seen it block things while not loaded, while uninstalled, etc.

Heh... do your other browsers work while you're on dial-up? Again, that would rule out the router and ISP as the cause (though obviously you do need to contact them if you can't reconfig your router). Just hate to see you go through all this trouble and wind up back at square 1.

    A brilliant thought.:D
I just had the same thought when I logged onto dialup this morning. :D
I'll try it when I finish my session on MG. As you say it will help pinpoint the cause.

I will be reloading all the Broadband parameters later today, using the manual ;), ISP techies (and Netgear if ultimately necessary).

    Thanks M_M again. Bazza

Safari (beta) does work on my dialup setup. ;)
I know it is probably not a fair test to check it out using dialup, but selecting the Software Bookmark (Favourite) in Safari is lots slower than doing the same in IE6.

I'll test again when I get my router problems sorted.:D Bazza

I've just downloaded and successfully :major installed the latest Firmware Version 4.01.27 (for outside North America and UK).
Pleased with myself. First Firmware upgrade. :D:cool

    Still only IE6 works.(
About to contact my ISP. More (successful) news later, I hope. ;)

Hallejujah. I rang my ISP Techy and he suggested un-installing ZA and unloading Avast.

I did this and now can access Firefox and The World browsers. :cool:cool

I still cannot get into Safari, but am not worried about that.

Thanks, M_M for the suggestion. Bazza
