Japanese PS3 in UK Advice Requested

Dear All,

Please can you help. A friend of mine had bought a Japanese PS3 and I need to know to what extent it is supported in the UK. So far I have found out that the PSU functions from 100V-240V, so will be supported on the 240V english PAL network. Also I know that providing a tv supports NTSC it will function with a Japanese PS3. What I need to know is whether the console will function with anything other than Japanese Games. Please can you verify that the info I have is correct and help me with the game issue.

You are right about the power. Laptops power supplies have been the same for as long as I can remember. I imagine you are correct about needing an NTSC compatible TV too.

However, you probably do need to import Japanese games. I may be mis-remembering things but one of the reasons people started modding consoles was to create region free versions to play US, UK and Japanese games on the same machine. Of course, modding invalidates your warrenty, may kill the console comletely and is potentially illegal now in several parts of the world.

Pretty much what i thought. He got it or £280, which is just over 50% of the UK retai price, so it's not too bad, but I think the hassle of getting Japanese games on import might not be worth it. There are a few places where I live who deal with PS3 servicing!! you might say, I think that's a decision he'll have to make. Personally speaking, I have a 360 and there's nothing coming out on the PS3 that floats my boat sufficiently to invest the time or hassle in importing, apart from Little Big Planet. I reckon he should just try and get a refund from Sony, or maybe a swap. Doubtful...but worth a pop!
