Java and XP

Recently I purchased a new Dell system that came with 15 months of McAfee Security Center, is this good security software?

It has also been advising me that the following update is available: - Java 2 Runtime Environment, v1.5.0_02-b09. I thought that I heard that it was a good idea to not use Java with XP, or am I confusing this with something else?

I have never heard a good thing said about McAfee.When my new computer arrived back in November,the first thing I did after set up was uninstall McAfee.

As far as Java Runtime is concerned,I have had no problem with it with my Windows XP OS.

 

McAfee is one of the better antivirus and security programs and is highly underrated.

It has won or is highly recommended in many magazine reviews, such as recently in PC Authority and PC User where it either came an equal first or very close to it.

There is nothing wrong with it.

ChuckS, there are two types of Java, the Micro$$oft one and the Sun Java one.

The Java 2 Runtime Environment that is asking to be updated is the Sun Java one.

You need either to be installed and updated in order to install certain programs and access some websites.

Micro$$oft Java is no longer updated nor supported and has had security breaches.

 

Nothing wrong with McAfee, I've used before, might be a little heavy on the resourses.
I actually liked McAfee, never had any problems with it.
I dont use any more, there are many good free antivirus & firewalls avaible that use less resourses.
Free ones I like Avast & Sygate.

Java & XP, no problem

 

Thanks for the replies, I'll upgrade my java and keep an eye on McAfee.
