Java Enabler? GRRRRRR!!

I have recently ( the past few days) clean installed XP ,now I am having a hard time getting any program that uses Java to work. I didn't install the sun version ( grrr) . I used the Microsoft jvm version. Now nothing works right , everything loads at a snails pace ( even though I have a LAN) . Do I need to install Java Sun instead ? I know that my machine is virus free and fully protected ,so a virus or spywear is not an issue. ( as I can barely connect to the internet in less than 20 minutes arrgghhhh!!!!) It took me over 45 minutes to get to the forum and I don't know if it will be possible to reconnect to it as this was my hundreth try today. Thank You in advance
