java netbeans alternative

    hi im a first year programmer and currently at Uni studying Computer Science basically we are learning java and writing codes is a taks we have t amster so ive been writing code but for soem reason netbeans giving problems can anyone suggest a alternative i need the program to compile adn allow me to edit the code say a text editor and able to run the code aswell. I currently have WIndows Xp as my operating system.
