   In the Control Panel there is Java 6 update 6 (137MB) and Java 6 update 7 (114MB). Do I still need J6u6? Is there an alternative to Java?

   Java updates are the complete program you can uninstall anything but the most recent. Use Add/remove programs for the uninstall.
   
   As far as I'm concerned you still need Java.
