Java update in system tray

    Hi
    I have xp home sp3 with Java 6 update 6. Today in my system tray i have got an icon which says an update for java is available. Never had one before is this normal/ok ?

    Yes, it is normal. On the Java company's homepage they have this fine scanner. It will tell you what version(s) of old Java you have and what version(s) you should have. But before you install new Java you should uninstall the old version(s). So this is what to do:

    1. Run a scan here but don't download any new Java yet: http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
    2. If old Java program(s) is detected go to Add/remove programs via Start -> Control Panel and uninstall all old Java version(s)
    3. Run this special tool to get rid of the remains of old Java
    4. Now install the new Java version(s)
    5. Reboot
    6. If it worked: delete/uninstall the special Java-cleaning tool that took care of the remains
    (7. Save a copy of these instructions so that you'll know what to do the next time
    8. Download Secunia PSI RC3. It will always keep your PC updated)

    PS: some people have special/advanced Java programs installed also. Most of us should only have one.
