Java - Versions -Which to retain

Hi There Experts
Java Versions
I am getting a little confused with what Java version I need to retain on my system (XP Pro)
Today I downloaded and installed J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1
I also have Java 2 Runtime Environment Standard Edition v1.3.1_02 AND Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_04.
Can I now uninstall these previous versions - or must they also be retained for full funtionality?
I looked for a simple answer on the Java site but could find nothing there.

It's ok to uninstall your previous java versions,and retaining the newest version 5.0.1.
