how do i know if i am running sun java or some other variation? This is for Ie, firefox and other browsers. I am just not sure. If I do have a specific java program on my pc where would i update it? It wouldn't do so through microsoft update right?

No, you wouldn't do it through microsoft. Microsoft's Java is no longer supported. In fact, you should remove it with this tool.

To check if you have the Java Runtime Environment (JRE), open control panel and double-click add/remove programs. If you have it installed, you will have and entry called JRE v.xxx I believe the latest is 5. You can always go to mozilla.org to get the java plugin for firefox (the jre), if they don't have it on majorgeeks (which I bet they do)

    Check the downloads section!

No not through MS as they dont supply it any more, if you have Java then you should have a Programs Listing for it, to see if you have Sun Java look in add remove.

If you need to check on the version of Java go here and download latest http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp

Opera if you use that Browser comes when you download it in two flavours Java and Non-Java to see which you are using click Help > About Opera and the listing will tell you.

IE, you need to use Sun Java.

Firefox, has Java installed already.. to check click Tools > Options > Content and you will/should see Enable Java / Enable Java script.
