javascrips on sites don't activate on my computer

Hello,

I have been having this problem for a long time and don't know how to fix it. Buttons with javascrips on sites don't activate on my computer when I click on them. Many other buttons dont work unless I click on it, hold button down and drag it to the first section of the lower bar. For example in this forum on page http://forums.majorgeeks.com/announcement.php?f=26 when I try to click on the link in the forum http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=33 it inly works if I hold and drag. This is a copy of one button I can't get to work at all javascriptpenSmallDemo('labeling');

Even worse than all that, when I click on the button in cPanel to check my email account after entering my password nothing happens. I havent been able check my emails for months. I have to forward every thing or go to the public library. So I know it works on other machines.

System: windows 98
RAM: 120.0MB
Genuineintel x86 Family 6 Model 11 stepping 1
Space on drive CFAT 32)

I did find I have this installed in programs, I don't know if it is relivent. I copied this: (Welcome to the JavaTM 2 Standard Edition Runtime Environment. This provides complete runtime support for Java 2 applications.

The runtime environment includes the JavaTM Plug-in product which supports running the Java 2 environment inside web browsers)


I can't thinlk if there is any thing else I need to give you. Just ask if you need more info.

the java plugin and java script are seperate animals. Make sure your security settings in your browser allow Java script. I would assume you're using IE in which case, make sure your security settings for INTERNET set at default under IE options/security.

I set it it defalt but it still says "error on page when I click to play. Do I need to restart my computer first?

no, just set it and restart your browser is all you need to do to test it.
Do you have all the updates for IE?

 

I don't know, I thought it did that itself or told when it needed it.

I uploaded & instaled: VB6 runtimes for windows98, then Internet Explorer Fix ( Zip ~12Kb) and installed it, then restarted my computer. Also I went to Mirosoft windows updates and checked for needed updates, downloaded and tried to install "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1" but was unable to install. I even restarted my computer twice and still no luck.

The problems are still not cleared up, no change. Any sugjestions other than starting over with a newer computer? (hahaha) sorry tring not to blow a gasket. I realy thought the Internet Explorer Fix was going to take care of things.

Well I loaded that, restarted and resetsecurity on java from high to low again. Still nothing. Am I missing something or do I need to redo the other programs?

This is Windows 98, so this may not apply....

Start, run:

regsvr32.exe jscript.dll

Then click ok. If it succeeds, reboot and try javascript.

 

I ran it it said ok I rebooted. It doesnt say error on page now but it still didn't work.

I was able to install "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1". then Internet Explorer Fix ( Zip ~12Kb). But, it didnt seem to do it ether. I will try rebooting again.

Any popup blockers installed?

Norton Antivirus?

 

No, I purchased it (Norton) but because of this problem I was unable to install it.

I do have Tini personal firewall, and Grisoft AGV Anti virus free version but I dont think it has blocks for pop ups cause I still get ocasional ones.

I ajusted some of the blocks on TP firewall, ones for win. updates.

If this wasn't so frustrating it would be laughable, what a pain.

I guess I didn't install the "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1". I just got the automatic critical update notice and went to check the instalation history. Bummer

Thank you anyway Adrynalyne. I Think there is more wrong than just this, I haven't been able to print anything or upload photos from my dig. camera in over a year. The system won't alow me to upload & reinstall the software for printer, and who knows about the camera.

I said it jokeingly befor but I realy think I may have to breakdown and get a new system.

 

This one is tough. I am better at sitting infront of a pc and troubleshooting than talking about it on the phone or bbs. Sorry I couldn't be of any further assistance.
