Hey guys, this is my first post here. Basically I'm having trouble with java and flash. Some java works, some doesn't. Flash links seem to not work. I think its Java Applets that work, but when I'm going through, for instance my friends digital camera slideshow via "shutterfly" - if you're familiar, in the bottom right corner I get "javascript:void(0);" I've tested my java via
    http://www.bodo.com/java.htm
and it says I am fully enabled. However, on weather.com for instance, it tells me that "java is disabled" - no idea why this is. Anyone know if theres a way to find out what the real deal is. Is something wrong with my virtual machine? I've recently reinstalled/updated my sun java. Also - i noticed that when trying to change my IE security setting from "medium" to "medium-low" it doesn't let me...says medium is the recommended level, and 'please choose a higher level' or something...I'm using SP2. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Since the recent court settlement between Sun and Micro$$oft over Java copyright, a lot of sites and programs require you to have Sun Java installed.

You can download the latest Java Run Time Environment HERE. While you are there and after you have installed it, you can do an online check.

In Internet Explorer, leave your security settings set at "medium".

Once you have Sun installed, go to tools, Internet Options, Advanced tab, and you should have a heading labelled "Java", which should be checked.

Under that, check "JIT Compiler for virtual machine" under the Microsoft VM heading.

In Tools, Internet Options, General tab, Temporary Internet Files, click settings, and then view objects.

These are your installed Active X scripts, which you can right-click and update.

In this folder, you should have Java and Flash icons at the least.

If you don't have Flash, then you will need to go to Macromedia's site and install it.

Also check in Tools, manage add-ons, that you don't have anything vital disabled.

hey thanks tons for the help...but I've run into two dead ends...under the advanced tab = there is no heading for Microsoft VM - doI need to download it from their website? and also, i looked at the objects - and updated all of htem except two - named "Java Runtime Environment 1.4.2" - Microsoft securtiy wouldn't let me update because of an unknown publisher...hope to hear back from you, but so far thanks a lot!

You're welcome, no problems at all.

When you said " Is something wrong with my virtual machine?", I mistakenly assumed you had it installed. It used to be part of a Windows install, but Micro$$oft removed it due to the court case by Sun.

    You don't necessarily need it.

Just see if everything works with Sun Java, and if you need to, you can download and install Micro$$oft Virtual Machine from their site.

Make sure you reboot after you install Java or change any settings.

Don't worry about not being able to update some of the Active X scripts, that's no big deal.

Also, you should now have a Jave plug-in applet in Control Panel, which you can use to personalise the settings.

    Good luck.

I read this "Microsoft no longer offers the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine" - so what should I do about that? not a big deal?

and one more thing - if you've got the time, take a look at tvguide.com - i cannot get the tabs that are flash to work, but I just installed flash 7...anyway to figure out why? I uninstalled spybot, someone told me that helps - it worked once after doing so, but never again

and one more thing while I'm looking at it - on the java plug-in console - under the advanced tab, do I want the Java Runtime Environment to "Use Java Plug-in Default" or "JRE 1.4.2_05 in C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_05"?

Don't worry about Micro$$oft Virtual Machine.

You probably won't need it, but if you ever do, it's not hard to find.

I went to TV Guide, and I don't seem to be experiencing the same problems as you, although I don't exactly understand what you are saying?

    To answer the Java question,

In the Basic tab, I have Hide Console checked and nothing else.

In Advanced, "Use Java Plug-in Default" is selected.

For Browser tab, check Micro$$$oft Internet Explorer.

Proxies tab and the rest are using the default settings.

    That should be it.

tvguide.com - thanks for checking it out. My problem basically is - when I click on the tabs at the top "listings" etc. it doesn't do anything. Nothing loads.
