Well, it's finally happened - after taking the online test (for the second time) in January I have been invited to participate in the interview phase, which is step #2 of the Jeopardy Contestant Search process...

    Yay!!! :major

Way to go Caliban.:cool I wouldn't have a chance based on when I've watched.
Let us know when you'll be on. I'll watch for sure.

IF (and notice that's a big 'if') I were to make it to the show, I'll make damn sure I wear a MajorGeeks t-shirt...

Might even convince Alex Trebeck to join MG...:major

Woohoo! That's awesome and pretty impressive just to get to that step. Congrats.:)

    When's the interview?

(My uncle got on the show. It was a few years back and I don't think he did very well.LOL)

    Hi Caliban,

Congratulations! That is impressive. Have a great interview. :)

@Laura, I'm sure your uncle did better than Wolf Blitzer -$4600.

Congrats Caliban, hope you sail through the preliminaries and destroy the competition :)

Don't forget to give MG's a mention when you're on the show :-D

Looks like it'll be May 8th in Boston, MA...

If you get a chance, ask him what the interview entails and let me know. I would imagine that more testing is involved, as well as identity verification, etc...

Great going Caliban! We watch Jeopardy very often and will watch of course if/when you get on. Good luck with step #2. How many steps does one need to get on the program?

    Thanks, oma...

No idea. They are very close-mouthed about the process, deservedly so I'd imagine, because of the crazies, spammers, etc...

To be sure, there will be more testing - there are any numbers of ways to cheat during an online test, so I'd be willing to bet there will be live, monitored tests in my future...

    Woo-Hoo! ;)

Several contestants on Jeopardy told on the program that they tried several times to get on. So it must be quite difficult to get that far. So I hope you get through all the hoops and be successful in appearing live on the show. That would be already an accomplishment. Had no idea that there is online testing first. Yeah, can imagine you'd have to undergo some live testing as well.

    From the followup email:

Hell, I'm just a poor South Carolina boy. That means I gotta pay for a round trip to/from Boston and to/from LA...

It ain't lookin' too good, folks...:(

Oh crap, I forgot to call my uncle!

and :( That stinks! With hotel and air and all that, that would get expensive. Maybe a fund raiser in your town??

Hey, I hope that you make it through, Caliban :). You'd think a very rich and successful show like Jeopardy would be able to pay for the contestant's costs, wouldn't ya.rolleyes

Thanks, guys. I'd like to say that the honor of making it past the first round is enough to satisfy me, but I'd be lying both to you and to me.

The fund raiser is a good idea - maybe, just maybe.

Don't worry - I haven't waved the white flag yet. Still got a couple of shots to try...

I like Laura's idea, it's a good one. Maybe a bake sale? car wash? fix computers club? :-D

Hope you get to go, that would be awesome, and I'm sure you'd be great! ;)

Okay...I FINALLY spoke to my uncle. I happened to be at my parents' last night and my brother was talking to him, so I can't even take the credit for calling him. :-D

Anyway, he did the same as you...got through the online test and then was invited to the next step.

The next step involves flying in and they put you in an auditorium with all the other's that made it through. You take the same type of test you did online and are given a certain amount of time on each question (he may have said 10 seconds) to answer. I guess they want to make sure you didn't have numerous people answering in the online one.

Anyway, after that, everyone does a mock Jeopardy round like on the show. You do it in front of an audience (who are made up of the others that are brought in).

He said that they break everyone up into 3 groups. His take on the groups was this: 1 group was those made up of the super super smart ones, 1 group was made up of pretty much the average (average being relative since you had to make it there to start with), and the last group being made up of those that 'looked like they lived in an attic' (his words, not mine roflmao). He considered himself to be in the 'average' group, which to me is rather scary since he got a perfect SAT score, went to one of the top med schools and is a heart surgeon.

He said the biggest thing to keep in mind is to remember it IS a tv show and is for entertainment, so they do go by looks and personality. From the time he went to the audition to the time he heard, he said it took 14 months. He had spoken to a woman who was there at the same time. She was blond and pretty....it took her 6 weeks to hear back and be told she was going on the show. He said the demographics are skewed heavily male, so I guess for females, maybe it's a little easier.

Anyway...I hope you find a way to make it there.

If you do....don't 'look like you live in an attic'. LOL ;)

Oh, and one more thing...he said to play video games. He said a lot of it is your reflexes.
