I need a simple program that will open jpeg and gif files. I never gave it a thought on any of my old computers, but I thought pictures would just open up in an IE window or something. For example, I get an e-mail with a picture file (jpeg/gif) as an attachment and when I go to open the file, I get a popup window that essentially says I have no program to open the file with.

    Weird!! confused

You can open jpegs and gifs in IE if you wish. You need to set up the file associations to make these files display in IE. Just right click on a JPEG files whilst holding down the shift key and you will see a menu with the option to "Open with..". Select IE and tick the box saying always do this and there you go. ;)

Yargwel.... When I open an e-mail, for example, it has a little paper clip in the top right indicating there is an attachment and when I hold shift and right click I get no such "Open with" option. confused

Select a JPEG file that is already on your PC to set this up then when you have done that it should work when you open the attachment.

    I would recommend irfanview.

Yes, you can download various programs, including freeware, that you can use. But, all Windows users have Paint. Are you not aware of this?

Also, .jpg attachments should open directly from your attachment in Widows Picture and Fax Viewer.

Best not to have Paint set as your default for opening jpgs and gifs. It's too easy to edit by accident and in your fluster, save your changes. The default program for opening them is best being a viewer only.

It should be possible to open Paint and then locate and open a jpg or gif but you'd be best just to set it up as Yargwel said.

I agree that if you want an excellent program for editing pictures, creating web pages with thumbnails of photo "albums" and even making screensavers, Irfanview is a great choice. Worth checking out all the features of this free and reasonably easy program.

Any ideas why Windows Picture and Fax Viewer doesn't open for him? That should happen.

I don't care to edit jpegs or anything to manipulate them. I just wanted a program that would allow me to view them.

Could I just use IE7 to view the picture files?

If I go to the folder "My Pictures" and I double click one of the jpeg files already in that folder by default, they open with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. However, if I try to open a picture file, for example, an attachment in an email like I used as an example earlier, I get nothing, not even the option to "open with..." to select a program to view it with. It simply will not open. Now that's not to say that I can't ee the picture, I use the Preview mode in my e-mail so I can see the picture, but if I wanted to open the picture as a separate attachment, no dice.

Can you save the attachments to My Pictures? If so, you should then be able to open them with IE or Paint or IrfanView or ... whatever.
