jpg thumbnail file titles missing

I have a problem in that I have a very large directory (3,442 files, 943 MB, & 7 subdirectories) in which I keep a collection of celebrity photos. I don't remember who's who generally speaking, so I like to see both the thumbnail and the file name (which contains the celebrity's name). But the directory has grown so much that when I open it and view thumbnails the filenames no longer appear under each thumbnail.

I am running Win XP Pro SP1 with a AMD 2400+ CPU, 768 MB DDR400 RAM, and a Shuttle AN-35 Ultra Mobo.

Quite a long time ago I know that when I was having a problem in viewing folders (I would set my preference to thumbnail but everytime I opened the folder the display was 'list'), somebody told me that by increasing a registry key value the problem with my preferences changing would be eliminated. So I wondered if a similar fix is possible here. I really don't want to rearrange my file system if it can be avoided because in the future when I save files I'll have to navigate between different folders or place all new files in a temp folder and sort them later.

In explorer menu>view>tumbnails does that work?

Tweakui powertoy from microsoft has a feature to change the registry so that xp remembers more folder settings.

I downloaded TweakUI for Windows XP. It does not have a setting to enable me to see the file names with the thumbnails. It has some tweaks for Explorer that pertain to thumbnails, to change the size of the thumbnails and the quality of the thumbnails. The changes only are applied to new saved files and not preexisting thumbnails.

Maybe I'll have some luck if I search through various freeware file managers. I've tried all the normally user accessible functions Explorer offers without any luck.

I am talking about the customization tab where you have to increase the folders to remember. So explorer remembers that it should be thumbnails.
What hapens when you try the sugestion in my first post in this thread?

I cannot find the setting option you're referring to. I've tried both TweakUI and TweakUI for Windows XP. I've read the help files completely, and looked at every tab at least a few times. Can you tell me exactly where the option you're referring to is in the app?

    Customization is under explorer.

Explorer was the first place I looked naturally. I see no way of determining what version of Microsoft TweakUI this is, if there were actually different versions.

But under my Explorer tab there are the following options: 1) Shortcut Overlay; 2) Settings, a) manipulate connected files as a unit, b) prefix "shortcut to" on new shortcuts, and c) save Explorer window settings; 3) change the colors for compressed files and for hot-tracking.

There are no other options on my Explorer tab. And there is nothing in my TweakUI that pertains to memory or resource allocation for any purpose.

    In control panel>folder options>view
Is the remember folder settings checked?

Yes, the remember folder settings is checked. I went through that several years ago when I had a problem with my folder settings reverting from my preferences. Somebody told me then of a registry tweak which I wish I still remembered now that is the direct way of allocating more memory to Explorer for handling file systems.

For the moment I've corrected the problem by simply copying the folder from D:/data/images/celebs to D:/data/celebs. I noticed after doing so that I have an image subfolder with over 8,000 images and it isn't experiencing the problem I was having with the smaller 'celebs' folder.

I found the registry keys I was hunting for, but changing the DWORD values didn't fix my problem. It was HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Software, Microsoft, Windows, Shell and HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Software, Microsoft, Windows, ShellNoRoam. The BagMRU Size value needs to be increased. When I was browsing through the registry and saw these they seemed very familiar, and checking with Google I found these were the keys to increase memory allcoated to file management.

Anyway, I can save new files as I was previously, but the path is slightly different. It won't be hard to remember that this one image folder is outside the image container.

    Thanks for your time.

    Verrrry interesting.

Is there a simple way to see how many folders and sub folders there are, at any one time?
Also is there a similar program for W98SE? Bazza

I'm not sure what you mean. You're not referring to simply right-clicking on a folder and then selecting "Properties" from the context menu, are you???

One handy little toy for viewing disc space allocation is called Soft-Central SC DiscInfo. You can get it from Download.com as freware - http://www.download.com.ph/SC-DiskInfo-Standard-Edition.htm . You can see a graphic and numeric break down from the entire hard drive all the way down to the lowest level subdirectory. I used to use Sequioia (you can find it on this page: http://www.freewareaid.com/utilsdiskutils.htm ), but SC Discinfo presents the information in a easier form to interpret at a glance.

I want to know how many folders I have created, or there are, in my XP and W98SE systems. XP has a default of 400, apparently, to enable custom setting your view default in each, and all, folders. I don't want disk space allocation, thanks for the link anyway. I will check it out.

Star 17 provided a link to see how many fonts are installed on your PC. Quick and simple.

    See http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=64649

link from Star 17 is to

A similar program showing how many folders is what I am after, for XP and W98SE, if possible. Bazza

Then SC Discinfo will do what you want. It will give you the count of how many subdirectories and files exist on a HD or within any directory or subdirectory you choose. Below is a screenshot of my C:/ drive. I could choose any directory in the list on the screenshot and analyze it the same way the C:/ drive is displayed.

Thanks meanfire. That looks like what I am after. I will download and try it out. Looking at your figures, the M$ default of 400 seems way too few. Although I figure that most of the folders/subfolders will use the same "view" as a default.

Pareto again, at least 80% of the folders will use the same default and the viewer will be happy with that choice. Bazza

    Link to SC-DiskInfo http://www.soft-central.net/diskinfo.php

SC-DiskInfo is an easy to use disk space usage analyzer that allows you to see which folders take up the most space.

This software requires Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows 2003 and does not work on Windows 95/98/Me/NT.

Free for home use, 321kb download. Not on MG, that I could find. Bazza
