What is the next version of Java after J2SE 5.0 update 7? Are JRE, J2SE and JDK all the same?

When I hit MattChugg's link to a new version of Java, it takes me here:

    http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

where I find JRE, J2SE and JDK ... I think all of them update 8

What I have now is J2SE Runtime Environment vs. 7 and I'm wondering which download button to hit to get the update that would follow this one.

yes, it is, but now I've got another question. Since I installed the update 8, I'm getting a request everytime I boot up to allow Java's update software to connect to the internet. What's that? I don't remember having that before.

It has always been there but you probably removed it from startup.

Using whatever startup editor you normally use remove the Java Update Sheduler. There is no real need for it to check for updates every time you start your computer.

Personally I use a program called Startup Optimizer but there are several, you could even use HJT to do this, windows defender alos has startup entry editing.

I use TrojanCheck 6.02, but I've never heard it mentioned in here. It's worked okay so far, but I could try something new.

A lot of the time I edit the registry manually but this isn't advised unless you are confident about what you are deleting. If you have windows defender installed I would advise you to use that, it will let you diable startup programs and also remove the registry entries entirly.

    Hi Matt,
since I installed Java update 8 and de-installed 7, I'm having big problems using firefox. It takes a very long time to load the Java when it's needed and when I try to change the webpage, it says firefox is already being used by something else. I can't find java in the task manager to turn it off nor can I turn it off directly from the icon. Is there a way for me to get the update 7 back for the time-being? Any suggestions?

Hmm i've not noticed any issues with this update myself.

I still have the installer for update 7 (jre-1_5_0_07-windows-i586-p.exe) on my machine if you can't find it anywhere else

    Hi Matt,

I found an old applications site that had it, reinstalled it and everything seems roger again. My computer, although xpsp2, is 4 years old and so I've noticed some of the most recent software doesn't run as smoothly. The site is:

I do too, however, in this case, I wasn't sure which one it would use after I installed the new one. Also, this is the first update I've had any trouble with at all on Java.
