I am working on a Dell Optiplex GX-150. A 930 Mhz P-3 processor with 512 MB of RAM. WIN XP Pro SP2 is the OS.

This pc is terribly slow. I have disabled the system restore and the remote access. I have used the system clean-up options and then defragmented the PC using Diskeeper (I figured they wrote the defrag program for Win XP so - it can't be all bad.) Prior to defragging I also ran Lavasoft's Adaware, and Spybot.

In the end all of this made only the slightest difference in system performance. Everything is very slow and programs take anywhere from 6-14 seconds to open occasionally not opening at all because they have "hung" or simply jammed the whole darn pc. To add more pain to my life my daughters and her friends are on My Space (the bane of my existence - as far as Internet contact goes - my pc always seems to run even slower after they have been on My Space). Of course having three teenage daughters probably has as much to do with that part as My Space does ... lol.

    AnYhOoO!

Is anyone out there capable of explaining how I can tweak this system to work at a relatively descent speed?

Please help - I am desperate and have no $$$ for a new pc... probably won't for at least six months or more.

Thanks as always because you guys have always been great here in sooooo many ways.

i would turn system restore back on, that way you might have a restoration point to go back to. i'd also visit the malware forum (just a suggestion, don't know if it will help in your case - right now), and go thru the "read me 1st" (something like that). my 1st guess (and it's a guess), is that you have too much on startup (especially since you have kids), and not enough ram, etc. your comp is gonna be slow anyway (because of your processor speed), however, on this comp i'm running an amd athlon 1.0 ghz, and it's not too bad. more ram, might help you out.

install this program, and run it (it will delete temp files, etc). also, there is a registry cleaner, etc. i want to see your starup entries. ccleaner --> tools --> startup. can you post a screenshot for us? g/l, sos

i normally use winpatrol to monitor my starup items, but i'd wait on that for now (don't won't other things slowing down your comp).

note - the reason i said what i said about kids and starup entries, is that they either don't pay attention (or want) all things to starup on bootup (ie - aim, msn messenger, yahoo messenger, quicktime, etc, etc, starting up), as well as other items. also, if you frequent myspace.com alot, you need to have your defenses up (antivirus/antispy programs), and current, running scans frequently. also, a h/d that is filling up (or going south on you), can make it run slow as well. for now, start with showing us your starup entries (also, starup - start --> all programs --> startup), and we can go from there. - sos

if all this helps then fine, but you might find that doing a fresh install of your os, would be more beneficial.
