Hi good people of MG I am fairly new at computers & have just bought a new HP laptop with Win 7 Ultimate & am loving it, I did all the restore disc stuff like I was told & the laptop is now a few months old & set up just how I want it, my question is how should I make a back up of it, if I down load Macrium Reflect FREE Edition 4.2.2097 would that be the way? or can you suggest another, I also saw on MG a program called Jaback would be OK to.

    Kind regards cdsam down under.:)

Hi cdsam, if you are looking for one of those programs that "mirror" your whole system so you can restore everything... data, prog's & settings then im sure somone will pop in shortly with a good rec' soon. [I think forum admin Halo uses and recommends a good'un]

I dont like to use such things, i prefer to just back my data up and do a full reinstall of windows and all my programs manually if needed. [takes me about 3hrs start to finish]

If you choose to do it that way, then i recommend Gold archive quality DVD's for your most precious data, and standard good quality for the rest, as well as having it all backed up onto another drive.

    Hi

You have a few options on both backup or say just data files and/or rhe whole hard drive as in cloning/ghosting/imaging (this method allows you to restore you hdd back to how it was before an issue with all installed application and settings etc, basically just as you left it at time of backup) or can just backup specific folders etc

    1. Imaging/cloning... For this yes Macrium Reflect is good but as you have Windows 7 Ultimate you have this option build in in the Backup and Restore menus, this also gives option to create a startup disk

My favorite backup solution is Acronis True Image http://majorgeeks.com/Acronis_True_Image_Home_2010_d2236.html it's not free but very good so worth testing it with the 15 day trial

    2. With Window 7 you also in Backup and Restore option have the ability to just backup specific folder locations of you important files, this route doesn't give you the option to restore your full pc, operating system and installed application back in case of a major issues as it just saves data
