    and it scared me.:eek
I tried to boot to it and run it live from CD = said something about installing linux kernel and stayed that way for almost a minute.:confused
I read the jacket - said possibly would delete ALL software from C:/ :eek:eek:eek

unclear on how to run this live and keep my WinXP safe. :confused

    Help?
    Blessings,

If you merely boot to CD, you are completely safe. :)

Thanks, Adrynalyne = it spooked me a bit when it said it was loading the kernel.

Port-O-San if you install it you may find you never want to go back to windows.

    That's the desired effect!
WIndows hasn't been "berry berry good to me" since Win95 - my last love affair with a computer. Built a dual processor P-1 233 MMX with 512 RAM and it was stable as a rock and it FLEW!

Tell me this: will all my pictures, movies, MP3's already on D:/ and E:/ be useable in UBUNTU? Haven't tried that and don't want to disturb anything without prior investigation.

Am writing you from the wonderful world of UBUNTU!
Booted from the disk and am exploring. 1st issue will be to reset the doggoned video settings - all is small at present. 'Twas a clunky startup and took forever but was expected, booting off a disk. Will give this every opportunity to please, though - since I love the whole concept of open source.
Many thanks for help recieved and yet to come!
    Blessings,

Okay, where to go from here..........
Am not ready to ditch WINXP completely yet, though I'll never BUY another copy.
What's the simplest/safest way to set up for dual boot?
I'd like to not have to reinstall my WINXP.
I have two hard drives - c:/ is main w/ current OS. D:/ is partitioned into D:/ and E:/ and is all music and video. Tons of free space on all drives.
Also am getting good at using virtual drives, if this is an option......
I'm just a little spooked at the possibility of losing what I have on C:/ in an install of UBUNTU.
If someone would be kind, a bit patient, and walk me through this, I'd sure appreciate it!
    Blessings,
    Port-O-San

Unless you have DRM, everything will still work.

Installing from the live/install is pretty well self explanatory with six simple steps. You will have the options of either Linux or your XP to choose from at boot. You can even choose to have your system still boot into Windows. I honestly cannot remember when I last booted my XP drive- I think it was in October. May I suggest Mint Linux? Some of the features in Ubuntu mean you have to search for features or have to learn some programming. Nothing difficult, but it can be annoying. I have installed this in about 8 boxes and it is great!

B.O.O.M.M. = which MINT version is the one you're liking so well? I'm willing to take a look at anything, so long as I can make a disk, .bin or .iso of it and run it live to try it out.
Please go into a bit more detail as to why you like MINT bestest - I'm dyin' for some hard fact from someone not involved in the build of the OS.
I liked what I saw when I ran UBUNTU live - but I didn't run it long, nor did I try to do everything I normally do within span of a day, so I guess I'd best boot it back up and give it a better run around the block - maybe even take it out in the country and thrash it a bit........
    Thanks and Blessings,

But, B.O.O.M.M., what are the reasons that you especially like MINT over other offerings please?

    Blessings,

EDIT: Now I understand why = http://linuxmint.com/rel_daryna.php Thanks a heap, B.O.O.M.M., for good sound advice!
