I've been interested in dual-booting with linux and xp, so I wanted to see how much space I had to figure out how much to partition but now im confused.

When I go into control panel>administrative tools>computer management>disk management it tells me on c: partition i have 74.46 GB but when i go into
control panel>system>general it says that I have .99 GB... so which is it?

This is probably a really stupid question but I just dont get it, sorry

    Thanks for the help!

geez, i probably didnt even put this in the right section... sorry!!

Is the control panel telling you what you have free?

I'd recommend installing EVEREST Free Edition 2.20
    from http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

It'll help you with all Hardware aspects of your PC.

Bit relating to Hard drives, check out the thumbnail attached. Work your way through the open Storage tabs, when you install it, for drive info. :)

    Hope this helps. Bazza

In computer management you have your drive size.An easy way to check--
If you go to accessaries, system tools, and defrag, it will show you the amount of hard drive ,and how much it has free.

Add thevfreespace and used space= size of hard drive.
System shows you installed ram (igb- shows 0.99 gb) 2.8 ghz processor running at 2.79 ghz

thanks guys for your answers :) but im still a little confuzed.

if the size is free + used = 74.46 GB then why does the other part say I have .99GB?

Sorry , as Adrenalyne says, and in my last post-- The system shows how much ram you have installed- not the size of your hard drive.
Windows can confuse yoy a bit, because it shows less than it has - some of it because of manufacturers of hard drives, and the way they measure capacities, and the way Windows reads them.
It basically means that you have an 80gb hard drive, and without confusing you more, that Windows shows this as 74.46gb.
You appear to have a gb of ram memory installed, and Windows reads this as 0.99gb.
You have a 2.8ghz procesor (cpu) and it is running at 2.79ghz, which is probably because your system is running under Everest at 2.79mhz, but the fsb (front side bus) is slightly higher than the initial speed to run it a little more efficiently. I will not say too much about clock speeds as this will confuse you more , at the moment.

I suggest you have a smaller partition for Linux than XP, as XP is more resource hungry - My suggestion is to keep 45gb for Xp, and 20gb for linux, and have a third partition (9.46gb) to save your documents in, so that you can read, and use them from both operating systems.

thank you much for explaining that! I do however have one other question - whats the difference between the 1 gb installed and the 80 gb hard drive? is there a difference?? thanks :)

One is RAM, the other is the media that the OS & your files are installed on. Think of RAM as a Blackboard. You put something up on it, run out of room, and have to erase. End of the day, you remove everything, and start over again the next day.

Now, think of the hard drive as a library full of books. What ever is in the library is there to look up information, and always returns (hopefully).
