Supreme Court Justice William Renquist has passed away from cancer.

With all the other stuff going on, here comes another fight in Congress.

Sorry to hear that. That will definitely add to the tension in Washington. I suspect there will be a lot of 4-4 decisions if they don't get someone approved before October.

If they don't get somebody approved before October, it will be 4-3 decisions. They were already one short.

And Renquist was Chief Justice. Somebody has to be bumped up to fill his chair.

I thought Sandra Day Oconnor was staying on until the replacement was named... not an option for Renquist.

I had a snide comment re algore, but in respect for the office I will restrain!

That was my understanding as well - that she had agreed to stay on until a nominee was approved.

I hadn't heard that O'Connor had agreed to stay on, particularly after the October start of the next session, which is just next month. (shrug) Congress has had plenty of time to announce her successor already.... With Renquist gone, it's quite possible she'll stay.

Saw in the paper this morning that Bush nominated Roberts for Chief Justice which means there needs to be someone to replace O'Connor.
