As the title says I installed Ubuntu the day before. It's all new to me and I am c-o-m-p-l-e-t-e-l-y lost.
    1) Do I need two partitions for Ubuntu. The partitioning wizard (very friendly) said I need one partition as / and one as swap (confused )
    2) When I boot I get the OS options and in 10 secs it boots in the default, which is Linux. No prob with me but little sis needs (pff, likes) XP. How can I make the Win partition my primary partition so that it will boot in XP unless I choose otherwise?
    3) Any help on the commands would be appreciated. Of course you couldn't list them here but a link to a manual or something would be great.
    4) Last but not least, how on earth can I connect to the net? I found something like ''connect to internet service'' but dunno how to configure it to use my ISP.

That's it for now. I'll post if anything else comes up. Thanks in advance.

    1. I have three. One for /boot, one for /swap and one for /.
    80mb, 700mb, 140gb resepctively.

    2. Yes, are you using grub? type locate grub.conf in a terminal and see if it gives a location. If not, try menu.lst (thats an 'L')

    3. Whta kind of net connection?

I guess this means I do need the partitions.

when I'm in a folder and start typing, something like a command line appears on the right bottom of the window (should I use this term now :D?). Can I type commands there or is it done only through the Dos-like application called terminal?

It's a DSL connection. If you're asking about the TPPP and IPPT and things I have no idea for (dummie :hammer ) let me give the ISP a call and I'll answer ya tomorrow.

Sailor, did you install Ubuntu on a system that had a working XP partition?

Here is a 13 min video on how to if you wiped your XP partition.

If you still have the XP Partition, or if you have another drive, as I do, you have a few options to allow access to the files.

Wooo, no. Windows is still safe and sound. As I said the partitioning utility was easy to use. The 250 G drive is partitioned in 45 G as /, 45 G as swap and the rest 160 G for Windows.
    What files? confused

    The windows files.

You create a virtual directory and you then can go to the root folder, select the directory of the windows files and you can still access them. Or you can have a dual boot system setting up with GRUB.

Did you view the video? There is a howto in the Ubuntu Wiki on setting up dual boot, and one on making drives visible to mount in Ubuntu.

umm, thanks but the video explains the installation of Linux and I've been trough that already. The system is indeed setup with GNU GRUB.
Any further help on the question about internet connection?

I thought you were gonna find out if it was pppoe, etc?

LOL, I forgot what I posted myself! Anyway, do you have something in mind? It will be really difficult to call the support and try to explain without knowing what I'm talking about. Should I ask them whether it's PPPOE? It's an ADSL.

Ask them what kind of DSL it is.

If its PPPoE or PPPoA, ask them what your username and password is, and anything else you would need to know to create a connection :D

Ubuntu is a great operating sytem.
I have almost completly switched over to Linux because of Ubuntu.
    No more Windows.

I see no relevance to the conversation ;)

Not relevant to the specific thing we work on right now but thanks anyway.

To the point. Adry, ISP says the type of the ADSL is PPPoA. Anything else you need to know?

Also I think boot is regulated by GRUB cuz in the screen where I choose OS it says GNU GRUB v 0.96. How can i set it to boot into XP in ten secs instead of Ubuntu? (question 2).

    Hey Sailor!

You may want to check out this article in the Ubuntu documentation titled, Connecting to the Internet.

It describes a utility, ppoeconf, that is supposed to be able to configure ppoa, as well (although I have to admit, I didn't have to go even that far to connect here)

Or config the router to be in Bridge mode and enable PPOE
