I went from RC to this, finally, and now my computer is freezing all the time. I used the cd that with with the upgrade from the company (ASUS). I thought that maybe it's a driver issue, but I'm not sure what to do from here.

    Any help is appreciated.

If there's enough time between the freezes, download and install the Windows updates. When I first installed Win7, I had BIG problems with my internet cutting out every 15-20 minutes. I did the Windows updates a few at a time due to the time limits on my internet connection, and one of 'em solved the problem.... you may have the same type of problem here, or it may be a driver issue. If you could provide the exact Asus model number, we can try to locate current drivers for you, or you can simply check the Asus web site yourself. Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

I just did the Windows update. How do I find out the exact model that I have?

If this is a laptop or netbook then there should be a sticker on the underside with the information on it.

if you can download it and get it to run you could try Speccy from Piriform. it tells me more than i'll ever know how to use.

    Hi

Just a quick question, did you clean install the RTM version or try and install RTM over the RC version? best to clean install if you have not already done so as the RC to RTM route is not supported.

If you gained an upgrade DVD from ASUS then you will have to install the original version of Windows that came with your PC then use the upgrade DVD to upgrade it to Windows 7.

To find hardware info use the below

Here is the report from Everest. Also, I do not have an original version of Windows, it came pre-installed on the PC.

This is weird, because the computer doesn't completely freeze, it's just the monitor basically, because if I'm playing music, it continues to play. HMMM

o.k. You mean you don't have the disc for Windows 7 RTM? I thought in your OP you said you installed over RC?

I did..I bought the PC with Vista, installed RC and then put the upgrade over it. There was no disc for Vista.

    Hi

Did you upgrade from the RC to RTM of Windows 7? as that can cause issues, if your PC didnt come with a version of Windows on disk its likely that you have or had a restore partition and thats the way to go, in restore to factory and then install Windows 7 upgrade. Seen it too many times that even though you can force (using the minclient bit) an install from RC to RTM, it causes alot of weird issues, alot due to the code in that version is developemental and has data collection routines.

Hi do the same with the full trial version of Everest HERE as you did above as the free old version doesnt seem to like Win7 and some motherboards info.

But you could try installed the Chipset driver HERE and reboot then re-install the latest nVidia driver HERE if 32bit Win7 or HERE if 64bit Win7

With the "its just the monitor basically" what are you seeing on screen, please describe? if jerkiness, then maybe the graphic driver and the above steps may help in installking chipset and gfx driver.

    That's a great suggestion!

I would also like to point out what has already been said. That is, at this point, save your data and format your HD using Killdisk as a suggestion and reinstall the RTM Windows 7 and see how things are.

Don't run killdisk; you will kill the restore/recovery partition put on the computer by the manufacturer. Not only does it include the OS but it also includes the drivers for your hardware.

I have noticed this a couple of the times that it's happened. Which intel chipset driver do I need to download?

Also, if I need to format to Factory, how do I go about doing this, and finding it there is a factory image to restore to?

There is usually documentation with the computer. I bought an eMachine in October and I need to press alt+ F10 if I which to restore to the factory settings. Or there is a program listed called eMachines Recovery Management that I can restore from within windows.

Look at both your documentation and look through anything in your program list that might be labeled ASUS or Recovery

So, I found the recovery disc that came with my PC. Went all the way back to factory, and then used the W7 disc with a custom, fresh install, and used the drives disc that they sent me with the W7 upgrade, and I'm still having the same problem.

So it just happened again, and I get the blue screen where Windows went to this to prevent damage. It's doing the memory dump, and then it reboots.

That's not completely true. When you run Kill Disk, you can select which partition you want to run it on.

I had this option when I system restored. I did it all to a single partition.

    Hi

I take it the PC was working all fine with the RC version?

With a Restore Disk, alot of junk gets added and many of these apps could be old and not compatible with Win7, whereas they where OK with Vista, did you run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor before upgrading to Win7?

However in Device Manager do you have any yellow ! marks and if so by what devices?
The Chipset I did link to in my earlier post (youd just click download) but HERE is more direct link, install and reboot, then check Device Manager again.

Then install the nVidia Graphics driver from HERE

    then see how you go.

If you get any more errors please write them down in full as they are very important to help us find the cause of this, plus please describe what you are seeing on screen, the issues and what you are doing at the time of the error, is it at boot, is it when you are doing a specific task or opening a specific application?

Click Start and type msconfig into the Start Search box and then click the Startup tab and disable all startups, then reboot and do you get the same crashes?

Yes, PC was working perfect with the RC version.

No, I did not run that, as I didn't think that I had to.

No yellow !'s anywhere in device manager.

Chipset and graphics cards are updated with the disc that I got with my upgrade.

Just a minute ago it happened, and all I was doing was browsing the internet, I clicked minimize to go back to my desktop, and it froze. It is completely random when this happens.

I've been trying to research this to no avail.

On this note, I just found a random post on the nets on some forum about people having this issue while they run the newest version of AVG. Something that W7 does not like. I'm going to try Avast and see what that does.

And this didn't work either. All was well for most of the night, as I browsed the internet and listening to music. And then BAM, frozen.

At this point, considering all the troubleshooting you've done, have you considered my suggestion to backup all your stuff and then do a clean install of the Win 7 RTM?

  31. xhomewreckerx

    xhomewreckerx Private First Class

I have tried that already as well. I wonder if it's because I am running Home Premium? The RC I was running was Ultimate.

OK wait, I didn't see that. You have formatted your HD? I'm not talking about using the factory restore thing either, I'm talking pull out Kill Disk, kill the whole thing then reinstall Windows and all drivers?

  33. xhomewreckerx

    xhomewreckerx Private First Class

I haven't done that, no. I haven't used KillDisk yet, because other people in this thread said that I shouldn't. I would be willing to try this though. Would you mind walking me through it? For a noob please, and obviously don't want to F anything up with my computer.

Their concerns are about the recovery partition and deleting it. Kill Disk however lets you choose which partition you want to wipe. You can even just wipe that portion of the HD and go from there.

There is one thing though I would like you to try beforehand.

I would pop open the case, and see how many sticks of RAM you have installed. Remove all except one and then boot the computer and use it and see if the problem returns. If not, then start adding back a stick a RAM at a time. If the problem returns right after you installed the last stick, then likely that is your problem. Bad RAM stick, or it could be that RAM slot. In such a case, take one of the known good sticks of RAM, plug it into that slot and see if the problem occurs. If not, its just the RAM.

Get back to me here and let me know what happened.
