just my luck

I recently got a nasty bug that had me formating and reinstalling my OS. Im running a 2.4gig Pentium 4 w/ 512 ram on Windows XP pro. I've been back up and running for about 48 hours and i have DL alot of drivers and updates for various programs. The problem is my modem connects at 14.4k like a flashback to my youth. Im not sure if this affects me at all because web pages are loading at a decent rate of time. I have tried to alter my connection spped and all that on the modem porperties. What do i do?
