you guys are probably going to laugh at me but how do version numbers work? I know that the most recent version is highest number (duh) but how do the devs come up with the numbers? whats the format? like some programs will have 2.0.0.1 and others will be 5.24 and then you haves some crazy ones like 2.12.12342.1 so is their any gerneral universal format or is it just up to the dev?

    thx guys and merry Chrstmas

A legit question Rob and nothing to laugh at,

many software have various version and build numbers and those are upto the dev, many softwares start out with say

Version 1 then each update to version 1 may gain a build number say, Version 1.01 or Version 1.01.1

Build numbers are generally an internal way to track each update, even down to just chaning an icon can result in a new build number, hence some of the 2.12.12342.1 numbers. Win Vista in testing had numbers like this for various versions and builds v5744-16384.

Then if a major update they will goto

    Version 2
    Version 2.01

    etc etc
