JV-16 Questions??

I'm really new to registry cleaning. From advice and recommendations found on MajorGeeks, I've downloaded and installed JV16 Power tools that includes the RegSupreme registry cleaner.

On browsing through function and setting options I've run across a couple of things on which I'd appreciation help.

1)In the settings for the RegSupreme registry cleaner help file, I found the following:

"Disable threading. By default the registry cleaner uses so called threads to improve the performance of the procedure. This can, however, under some special circumstances cause some problems with certain hardware configurations. These problems include crashes, blue screens etc. in such case you might solve the problem by checking this option."

I've used the registry cleaner several times with it left set at the default setting of using threads, without any problems. Should I be concerned leaving the RegSupreme at its default settings.

2)On of JV16 functions is to search for "empty Directories" including "subdirectories". When I do a scan it identifies about 180 such directories. I haven't done any cleaning here because I'm not sure of the consequences of doing so. Any information/clarification about cleaning "empty "directories appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help/direction.

that cleaner is an advanced cleaner and I can't think of anything that does everything automatically .. most require some user input as what they want to delete.

The threading option.. if it works, don't change it.

as for the folders, make sure they are not part of programs that you have installed. search for the folders in question on your machine and see if they belong to programs that you have installed or are just left overs from an 'incomplete' uninstall.

Kodo got here first with this (as usual), but the two points he made bear repetition: Leave the default threads alone unless you have trouble, and consider de-selecting the empty folders option. It can cause some hiccups later when programs that keep empty folders for use while they're running start complaining that their holding folders aren't there. There are lots of empty folders on your machine that are no problem at all, and if there is a registry reference to them, they're worth protecting.

Unless you have a preview copy of the next version of jv16PT, you don't actually HAVE RegSupreme. The RegCleaner that's part of the Registry Tools section of Power Tools 1.4x is the older version of JV's cleaner, with the old engine. He wrote RegSupreme later, and Macecraft has marketed it separately, but it will be included as the reg cleaner in the NEXT version of jv16PT.

    Kodo/Wisewiz,

Thanks very much for your help and advice.

I probably wasn't very clear about the "empty directory" question. The scan for "empty" directories is a separate function and scan apart from the actual registry scan. i.e. you can choose that scan as one of the functions JV16 performs. When "empty" directories scan is performed that's all that scan looks for. After Kodo's original response, I looked through the scan performed looking for "empty" directories and it seems all of the directories identified were related to software currently on my machine. Good thing I asked you guys eh??

I checked back at the JV16 site, and I could be wrong, but it seems that they're JV16 version 1.41 does include RegSupreme.

    "RegSupreme
A super fast, lightweight standalone registry cleaner.
(Contains only the registry cleaning engine from jv16 PowerTools)

    Introduction of the program

    Thanks again for your help!!

Yeah, knew that. I used to use the regcleaner in the freeware jv16 all the time. Then RegScrubXP appeared, and it seemed to be more complete, so I switched to that, but just for the regcleaning function. Then jv produced the new version of jv16, but it was commercialware, and I thot I'd wait a bit ... and THEN jv wrote Regsupreme.

So, the suggestion we meant was to leave the regcleaner default settings, but not to clean out the empties automatically with THAT part of jv, cuz they might be useful.
Yep. That just is there to tell purchasers of RegSupreme that all they're getting is the one function, not the whole set of Power Tools. It doesn't mean that RegSupreme IS the registry cleaning engine from Power Tools. Jouni Vuorio (jv) is a member here, and he dropped by and wrote a bit about that earlier. The engine is much faster in RegSup than in jv16 1.4x, and the algorithm is much finer, so lots of things will be picked up by RegSup that the regcleaner in your current jv16PT will miss.

But both are excellent, and you'll get a free or very cheap upgrade when the new version is out, and THAT one will include the latest RegSupreme, an improved version of the CURRENT RegSupreme.
