I am new here, but have found the read me first posting to be Really helpful.

I just would like to know if Kaspersky anti-virus 6.0.2.621 that I use has a firewall included? or do I need to install one or enable Windows XP? Windows XP is telling me that no firewall is being used. I thought my Kaspersky was a firewall, but do not actually see a setting for it. confused

There is no firewall available with that version. You need to turn on Windows firewall or use a different one like Zone Alarm.

If your online with the pc that has no firewall and you don't have windows firewall turned on either, there's a good chance your PC is already hijacked. It only takes a few minutes online to be attacked if you have no protection.

When you first load windows on a blank or formated drive, disconnect from the internet until you have a decent firewall installed, windows firewall is not decent.

Go imediatedly for your critical updates from microsoft before you go anywhere else for added security.

You can browse online without an anti-virus but not without a firewall.

If your lucky, maybe your router has a firewall thats protecting you from being attacked.

Inorder for an application to supply all your security is would be called a security suite "Kapersky Internet Suite" or similar, a suite will have firewall, anti-virus and spyware protection all in one, along with some other crap.

How would I know if I've been "hijacked"?

Just start running all the spyware apps you can, as well as your anti-virus application and maybe a trojan finder (you can download trojan remover trial and run that) watch for connections to the internet that you are not initiating. If your hijacked what would happen is your PC would be used as a BOT to send spam or infect other pc's via e-mail. If you suspect you are hijacked immediately disconect from the net to prevent futher infections and try and fix your pc offline. If you have recently installed and do not have a bunch of stuff on your drive consider downloading Zone Alarm Free, put it on a cd-rw along with a few other choice apps (zip rar applications, anti-virus if you don't have a disk already etc.) and format and reinstall just to be safe. This time disconnect from the internet before you intall the OS, then install ZA free, your motherboard drivers and graphics card if you have one, then connect to the net and download all your criticals before visiting any sites.

wow, ok. This is not a new PC setup. I just recently learned firewall was off when doing the read & run me first malware removal. I do not think I had any problems until I got a trojan virus that Kaspersky said was uncureable. That is when I found this site :) Glad I did!
I have learned a bunch! When removing malware it must have turned off windows firewall, and that is when I got a notice that no firewall was in use. I did leave it off for a little while while trying to enable kasperskys firewall which I have found out I do not have!
I hope that I have not been "hijacked" I do have a wireless router, but do not know if it has a firewall that is on or not. I remember having trouble setting it up at the time, and do not know if it is secure. I know it is not password protected, but it is a G router and does not reach very far outside the house. I'm thinking of buying Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 because my antivirus is going to expire in about 5 weeks anyway.
Do you know if Kaspersky is rated very good for security?
Online Armor Free version and Zone Alarm are recomended on this site, but I like Kaspersky. ( until it couldn't get rid of Trojan, but then again I might not have found this site!)
Right now I have Windows firewall on, but I read that it is not very good.

Well one of the problems with Windows XP firewall is it only blocks incoming attacks, it lets anything that wants to, send out information with no restrictions. Which means if you do get infected with a virus or trojan, it has complete access to the net. It also means that every program and its brother that you install, has free access to call home. I tried Kapersky but I didn't like it, but thats beside the point, if you like its fine because I don't have to use your PC and its highly rated when it comes to being secure and effective. I personally do not like the way everything is becoming a suite. If I like sos and so's firewall and someone elses anti-virus then I want those programs individually, not a bunch of crap I don't need. But having a suite means charging more money, and its a greedy, commercial, corporate controlled world we reside in. this is why for now I stick with the freeware, I can have my individual programs at the cost of some configurability.

I offer this comment not to confuse you, but to offer another point of view. I access the web via a wireless modem/router that serves as a hardware firewall. I also have Windows Firewall turned on (probably not necessary).

It is true the above configuration is providing only one-way protection, i.e. protecting me from incoming threats. But I am not yet convinced that installing additional software to provide inbound and outbound protection as well (i.e., two-way) is necessary for me. See this thread for details: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=155290

There are other interesting threads in this forum and others regarding one-way firewall protection versus two-way protection; solid arguments exist supporting both points of view.

You may also want to consider running a ShieldsUp! test to verify that your tested ports are stealthed. https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

Thanks for the good info. I went out and got Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 today and installed. (It has the firewall with it). I did a full system scan and I think I am ok. I configured firewall to prompt me (training mode) for all I/B AND O/B connections. I
