Ohhh yeah, I'll bet you're wondering now, aren't you. I didn't know where else to read, of course. I use Zonealarm for a firewall, and I'm connected to a router wirelessly. I'd like to see if Kazaa will actually connect for once, because LimeWire is a major system hog and will keep Firefox from loading a web page. I've enabled so many ports that I'm beginning to think my firewall is now a firerubble. Anyone help?

Kazaa has been offline for ages.

First up, p2p is a pretty bad idea and kazaa ships with several 'compulsary' 3rd party applications which are known to be spyware. Even though the lite version proclaims to be spyware free I suggest you remove it.

Secondly: You should be careful opening random ports on your firewall, I suggest you reset your firewall rules and start from scratch for safety.

Thirdly: On ANY application that needs to be able to accept incoming connections opening the required ports on your software firewall won't be all you need to do. You will need to set up port forwarding on your router too.

    Actually...
    Just my opinion...
Any help reference toward file share software should be refrained from due to potential legal liability of the site providing such help.

No offence to anyone here or Jagdpanzer... :)
Just that the record company lawyers are going nuts with lawsuits toward anyone associated with file share software.
    And their tentacles are everywhere.

You are entitled to your opinion but let me clarify something for you as your opinion is inaccurate. The use of file sharing applications is perfectly legal as is offering assistance in how to use them. If they were illegal to use we would not offer any of them here for download.

Where the question of legalities comes in is what the individual end user is doing with the application. Are they using the application to share perfectly legal files from large albums of family photos, etc. or are they using it to share cracked software?

We, nor any other site offering assistance for these legal programs for download have any control over what the end user does once they have the application on their own personal computer. Therefore, offering assistance in getting it working for them, just as in any other application such as filezilla, an AV app etc. does not in any way make us liable if they choose to do something illegal with the application.

I just go by the facts at hand in the United States.
It has been found legal to distribute file share by the courts...
It has been found legal for users to use them by the courts...

    But...
The legality of the issue isn't the point.
You don't need a legal basis to sue anyone.
The tactic is intimidation and blackmail by the music industry with a legal war chest that would shock God.
They are "suing" sites prompting policy changes.
They are "suing" people and organizations.
They are "suing" Limewire right now.
Just to let you know I don't agree with it...
But that is the facts as they stand now.
And just trying to help here.

But... if your comfortable on taking the chance that you'll not get sued.
    I am too. :)

Going by what you are saying we should then remove downloads and stop assisting with email clients b/c end users (note: we've already established that we,MG's have no control over) 'may' use the email apps. to distribute spam, viruses or illegal apps/mp3's. Many lawsuits in the spam arena.

Lest not forget browsers! OMG! We should remove those too right? End users who we assist 'may' use them to access child pornography or warez sites in order to download cracked programs rather than using P2P programs..many do b/c they don't trust P2P.

Oh dear!..Hex editors! *thud* Hackers can use those in so many ways that are explicitly illegal per EULA's for various software re: making any modifications.

Bottom line..the Facts are...at this time it is not illegal to distribute the applications. If it becomes illegal to distribute them then the downloads will be pulled and we will stop offering assistance in this area.

Finally, it has nothing to do with being comfortable..it's knowing AND understanding the law...besides..that's what MG's has a lawyer for.:)

And on that note..it is time for this thread to get back on topic..assisting the OP. Thanks.:)

    Agreed...
    Also agreed it's nonsense.
But it's what the music industry is doing.
Suing people associated with file share software in any way.
    Like it or not.
But I'll not bring it up again. Promises. ;)

    Now...
    Back to topic.
    There is Shareaza...
    It's free and spy free.
But slow... For DSL or higher anywho...
And the hit rates aren't nothing to brag about.

Limewire is about the best as far as I know.
Pro if you can get ahold of it.

I didn't ask for a lecture. I asked for help on how to get it connected. I didn't want people to tell me about any legal bullshit, I'm one of the most well-informed kids for my age in the way of the legal system. The version I got has been checked and double-checked for spyware, and it's clean. Next, I could use help realted to this program, as Limewire ruins my internet connection completely and Shareaza gets nothing for search results and doesn't download anything without a four-day wait. I've downloaded two, yes, two files with shareaza, and it's the most useless pile of crap I've ever tried to download with.

Try MP3 Rocket. It's based on the 4.9 build of Limewire and uses Gnuttella and Java.

BTW how does Limewire ruin your internet connection?

Slyck.com is a P2P oriented site and their forum has a section dedicated to dealing with Kazaa and other Fasttrack clients. You are far more likely to find people with Kazaa/Fasttrack experience there. As you've noticed, there are few if any Kazaa users here as it is a rather poor and outdated client and most here avoid it like the plague.
