Kazaa Lite keeps kicking me off the internet

I use ADSL for my internet connection through BellSouth, the local phone company. I use WinXP Pro for my OS and have been using it for about 2-3 weeks now. I'm also using IE6 for my browser. None of this sounds unusual and they all work seemlessly and flawlessy. I have, however, discovered a problem when using Kazaa Lite. When I open Kazaa Lite, whether downloading a file or not, my internet connection will terminate after about 20-30 minutes. To make matters worse, I can't reinitialize my modem via the software provided by my isp. I am forced to reboot the lappy and then all is fine. If I don't open Kazaa Lite I can stay connected to the net indefinitely, but when I open it, whether downloading or not, my conneciton to the net terminates after 20-30 minutes.

I thought it may be problem with Kazaa Lite, more specifically the new version I was using (build 2.02), so I downloaded an earlier version that I was using with Win2k Pro which was build 2.0 but I am still having the same problem.

I haven't installed any new software except a desktop. I have also ruled out my firewall since it is the same one I have been using all along. I have checked with my isp and looked through Kazaa Lite's help section but haven't been able to find an answer.

    I would do the following.

    Find the Kazaa Directory.

    Run "Remove" program.

    Goto www.winmx.com

    Download Winmx

    Use that.

Kazaa is a virus ridden, spam fest and should be taken away and locked in a dark dark room somewhere, never to be used again.

I'm using Kazaa Lite. No spyware and my virus scanner is top notch.

I know there's a bunch of ISP out there that's started banning on such programs.

For example, an area where my friend lives.... his cable/DSL company banned all Kazaa downloads. If you try to download using Kazaa, it wont work.

It could be a guess.. but maybe your company is cracking down on ppl using Kazaa... thus if you open or run Kazaa.. you'll have that problem.

    Just a guess.

I was afraid of such a thing but I went to my ISPs website and didn't see anything about it. I wonder if it could have been implemented on the sly?

From _what_ I know bout my friend's problem.... they NEVER mention about banning Kazaa and that old program used before (but got bankrupt or it was canceled.. forgot.. the one with the music lawsuit).

    Good luck find out though.

    Hey SwatShark,
    Just verifying your problem.
I'm using a 56kbps dialup connection, Win2K, and i've noticed when Kazaa lite (build 202)is running, i get disconnected from the internet in 20 to 30 minutes, also! This program seems to be quite the bat rastard.

If your ISP was banning Kazaa then you would not be able to connect to any downloads, unless you set it to use port 80. Unless they have started packet sniffing to work out what packets are going to what apps (cant imagine why they wud want to do that) its probably not that they've banned it.

Have you ever had drop outs like this before using K-Lite?
And is it that you have been totally disconnected (phone-line "click") or that youve just stopped transferring data?

Kazaa uses a lot of RAM and loadsa bandwidth, it might be that your trying to transfer data too fast.

Oh and have a look at your modem settings, and the speed its set to. make sure it is 56k and not 112k might be your problem.....

Goldfish, I can connect to Kazaa, but only for 20-30 minutes at a time. I use to leave it running in the background, but here lately I keep getting booted. I get more like a phone click where I get completely disconnected from the net. It transfers data and I notice the transfer rate(s) will drop to like .56 kbps then I look at the modem icon and it's yellow (initializing) instead of green (ready to use). Given that I'm able to connect to kazaa I'm guessing my ISP hasn't blocked it but I'm wondering why I'm having trouble all of a sudden like this.

I'll try tweaking the modem settings and adjust the port settings in Kazaa and report back.

Ok, I changed the port settings in KL to 80, from 1060. I immediately got kicked off, but giving it the benefit of the doubt that I was tinkering with it I just rebooted. I'll see how long it stays online this time and report back. Oddly enough I couldn't find where to check my modem speed on my internet connection to see what speed it was set at.

Ok, I stayed online for about 35-40 minutes this time before I got kicked off. I wasn't downloading anything, I just left KL run in the background. So, it's not the port settings. What else should I be looking for? I know there is something simple that I'm missing here but I don't know what it is.

I have changed the modem settings. It was set for 64k digital and I changed it to 56k digital. We'll see how long it lasts this time.

Ok, I stayed connected for about 15 minutes this time. Grrrrrrrrrr

I've never had this problem with KL before. I was using Win2k Pro and the same older version of KL that I am using now. The problem only began when I changed OS to WinXP Pro, so I am beginning to think there is a service in WinXP Pro that is causing my trouble. I know there are lists of services out there on the net, but does anyone know of any service in particular that might be causing my problem?

this may not help at all... but its worth a shot.

try getting DietKaza in addition to K-lite and running them simulaneously. www.dietk.com

I do that because of DietK's features (mega find more sources, Supernode Jumper, etc...) but what i realize is that when DIetK is open and THEN you open K-lite, it re-routes the connection.

maybe this could get you around an ISP's kazaa network lock? or whatever is going on...

    just a thought

I downloaded a beta driver for my usb modem and believe it or not, that seems to have fixed the problem. I've had Kazaa Lite runnng in the background (connected) for nearly 12 hours now and I haven't gotten kicked off. I don't know why a new driver was needed unless the driver that came with the installation disc didn't like WinXP Pro.

Here's a good site to check out XPs services. You may need to use a newer version of K-Lite. I'm running the latest version with XP Pro with no problems. I've only been using it for a few days but there are a few "issues" to be resolved if I continue.
