I formatted my comp and Microsoft is trying to update me w/ KB898461 but it keeps saying it failed. The KB898461 is just a update that compresses the update files into smaller packages. Weather i need it or not its kinda annoying having that thing pop up every 2 min and try to download. I guess that i could just turn off the auto-update but id rather fix this situation. I tried going st8 to microsoft and download it but i got the same results. I cant download IE 7 either, dunno if its because of this.......Is there a way to fix another 1 of Bill Gates screw ups?.....thx in advance

I'm sure you've already read this, but what the heck....
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/898461/en-us
It seems as if this is one of those updates that other updates work off of, and without it, future updates may take longer, or may not install at all. Then again, I could be wrong.
I found the following tips in the MS forums:

I went to the forums that u posted and tried everything that they said to do, but i still cant get that update, any other ideas?......I tried sending an e-mail to microsoft about the situation and they wanted to charge me $59.00 to solve the issue (no wonder bill Gates is loaded)

    Hi

Try this, start your PC in safe mode ( hit F8 at startup and choose Safe Mode with Networking ) then locate this file spupdsvc.exe and its in this location C:\System32\spupdsvc.exe ( so long as your Windows OS drive is C: if not change that drive letter )

once found rename it to spupdsvcold.exe ( just adding the old makes it a different file so should not run )

Then reboot and try and get the updates.

spupdsvc.exe is the runone updater service and can cause issues at times for updates.

Unfortunatly i tried that, i went back into my system32 folder just to make sure that the file was still changed to spupdsvcold.exe, and it is :(, any other solutions?

Go to C:\Windows\Software Distribution and rename the entire folder to (you guessed it) Software Distribution-Old and try the updates.... this is a 'fix' I've used before that has worked when updates wouldn't install. I forgot about it last night... it was midnight and I was pretty freekin' tired ;)
    Good luck!

i went into safe mode, changed the folder as u said, and tried the update again...still wont update, failed. i went into the windows folder to make sure that it was still changed and it was, it also made a new Software Distribution folder. Any other ideas dlb?

Yeah, that's normal. We renamed the old one because sometimes if something in there gets corrupted or just doesn't "jive" correctly, renaming (or deleting) the folder causes Windows to create a new, clean folder. But apparently that didn't help. I forgot, you did try to download the KB898461 .exe file and install it by itself, right? If not, the link is the first one below. The other may be helpful, so give 'em a look. It may also be helpful to look down at the bottom of each page for links below. There's links to articles and downloads that relate to the info on the page. Wow, that sounds really confusing. Anyway, here's some links, check out everything including any other links on the pages.

The first link is to the KB898461 executable file, the others are different KB downloads that may help, and they have possibly helpful links also...
    Good luck!

I was just thinking, you could try running Ryan's Post SP2 update. It includes all Windows updates that have been released since SP2's arrival. There's like 90 or so of them, and they're all included in one big file. Or you can try AutoPatcher which is similar.
    Ryans Post SP2 Update http://www.majorgeeks.com/RyanVMs_Windows_XP_Post-SP2_Update_Pack_d5085.html
    AutoPatcher August07 Update http://www.majorgeeks.com/AutoPatcher_XP_Update_d5213.html
    AutoPatcher August07 Update & Core http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/System-Tweak/AutoPatcher-XP.shtml
Ryans Update is designed to be slipstreamed into an XP disc for installation, but the AutoPatcher is kind of like a stand-alone Windows update .exe where you can pick and choose which updates you want... I used to use AutoPatcher all the time, it's great.

Sorry I wasn't here to see that last night. When you formatted it, you changed some of the files to older versions that the new update is not expecting to see - that's why it appears broken.
I'll have to do some searching through my notes to see what files need to be changed to fix updating again.
