This "important" update for .NETframework2 won't install for some reason, and I'm wondering if it's really necessary. In fact, I'm not really sure what I need .NETframework 2 for. Can anyone tell me in layman's terms what this thing does? I wouldn't mind freeing-up some disk space, so can I just uninstall it?

The .net framework 2.0 is basically a runtime dependancy for programs written in .net languages. I write in visual basic .net 2005 or c# so if you were to use any of my programs you would need that.

The update to the framework won't install unless you actually have .net 2.0 installed, the framework is still an optional update so unless you have installed optional updates or installed it manually you probably won't have it. I assume the update to the fx is a critical one which will always try to install hence your problem.

If you already have it installed I would leave it on there, more and more programs are starting to use it these days.

    Hope this clears things up

I have .net 2 installed. It even shows up in add/remove programs, however the update, classified as "important" will not install.
So should I just leave it on the computer and forget about this update thing?

I installed the update just now on the second attempt, it seems my computer needed rebooting from something else.

Try rebooting and then give it a whirl.

    Hi!
I'm in the same boat as you. I keep trying with the update, as well as rebooting, but with no such luck. At the moment I've put the update on ignore so the computer doesn't keep trying.
    Ho hum......... you're not alone.

ANy specific error messages ? try looking for Kb917283.log in your windows folder

The update addresses an asp.net vunerability so unless you are hosting a server (running IIS not apache) hosting asp.net applications I wouldn't worry for the minute. As soon as I have more information I will let you know

Thanks. The error message is 0x643 which says absolutely nothing about what the problem is. From what I've been able to ascertain from MS newsgroups, the error is with the patch, not the framework, and to try to completely remove framework2 & reinstall it (just so the stupid patch can update) could have disastrous results. If you get more info about this I'd appreciate hearing from you. Thanks again.

Sometimes if you are getting these updates from Autoupdate or Windows/Microsoft update websites, they seem to install ok but on return to WU/MU site they list again as an update you still need to do, best workaround i know of is to download and install the manual version of the KB file. I just think sometimes the update log corrupts and just doesnt register you have installed this update.

This is the location for download of that KB917283
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...7B-9758-489F-8BE8-5177AAF488D1&displaylang=en

yours will be the botton of the three, download and install, then go back to Windows update and check if its still listing or not.

Thanks Halo, but I've tried this several times already and it still doesn't update. I am throwing my pen up in the air, and going to eat ice-cream.

Think your only option now is the removal of .Net and re-install, I did this a while back as I forgot I was running a beta version of .Net2.0 and couldnt install the final version, couldnt even uninstall from Add/remove the beta either so I had to run this script, which removes all .Net components and start again.
