We need more info. What are the full specs of your system. What operating system, XP HOme, XP Pro, W98SE, 2000, or what? What program are you running when you get the error message? What firewall and Anti-virus program are you running? How many other programs are loaded at the tim of the error? What steps have you taken, so far, to try and fix the error? Without this info, I doubt if anyone can help you quickly. Bazza

Sorry, it is called going home from work, talk to a guy I know at the local liquor store about home brewing, then coming back home, trying to catch back up on the forums, now I'm here.

    :)

Try, Start, RUN, type in ----> Msconfig (then hit enter)

    Click Advanced

Where it says " Limit Memory to <x> MB" set <x> as 512 If it is already at 512 set to a smaller number like 384.

    OR....

Do you have more than one memory "stick" in your computer? Try taking one out, and see if you still have this issue.

Windows 9x (and ME) machines always had issues with lotsa ram. Specially 512 and over....(I know that the 98 SE unofficial SP2 has a patch/hack that fixes this issue...unfortunately, it is for SE only)....

Hope some of this will squash your problem.....

Also, when you Start-->Run, type msconfig and press <enter>, go to Startup Tab and count up how many processes are ticked in the boxes. I have 13, for example. How many do you have? Bazza

Wow, that also gave me an idea. Thanks bigbazza....

If you were to Right click on "my computer" and select properties. There (if memory serves me) a performance tab. What does you system resources number give you? I don't have windows 98 here....so this just from memory....

  11. videogurl

    videogurl Corporal

    I counted them, a whole 35...I guess that's alot?

  12. videogurl

my system resources say 13% what to do? I did have spyware too cleaned that up.

Sorry I thought you had given up on me. If I set the memory down, will it run better or worse?

  14. theefool

    theefool Geekified

Click Start, Run, type in MSCONFIG (smash the ENTER key, in frustration :) )

Select "selective startup" (It is the last radial button)

uncheck the startup items (once again from memory)

Hit ok. Reboot. Try doing whatever you were trying to do.

You have WAY to much starting up. It should be around 70 or higher.....

Anyway......so to speak....we need to know what your startup items are. within msconfig is (i think) startup tab. Click that and list them here.....

ok can I make a file from msconfig so you can see whats starting up without me typing it all out? If I cant well it might take me awile.

Normally, this process would be from the spyware forum, but....and I quote (with a few special modifications... ;) )

A lot of stuff to read... just download this:

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3155

Unzip it, then run the executable

Hit okay if you have a pop up about the program "

use the option....."do a system scan .... save the log file..."

I could say, just paste anything with O4 in this thread....but, I'm going to say, post the whold thing here.....

Also, it seems that ELXGFNCG.EXE seems to be unknown. I'd get rid of it, then REBOOT, and see if something similar reappears. This is definitely malware.

Well done, theefool. Keep at it. I'm back on, from yesterday. I see VideoGurl had an incredible number of processes running, compared to my 13. "Out of memory error" usually means "out of Resources", not "out of memory" as you probably know.

VideoGurl, how many processes are you down to, now? Keep an eye on the number every time you carry out theefool's suggestions so we can see your progress. As you reduce the number of processes, the more Resources you free up. Bazza

Before I do my Remove this and that stuff...do you have any issues now? One quick note...how old is norton on your machine? Norton is fatware (my own term :) ). Basically fatware are decent products but they tend to bloat your machine with items that are needed but tend to bog down your machine. Don't get me wrong, I've used Norton in the 80's. They were great back then, but when they went to windows...well...

Anyway, I'm not saying get rid of it...same with mcafee, we need to work with it. So, changing to avg or Avast! (both free) is a good choice (they are also both lean cuisine-ware :) )

Side note: Woohoo just did a spybot and adaware scan on my own machine after one month: Spybot 0 Adaware 0.... Excellent

So, after all this....are you having any problems? Memory errors?

    Videogurl and Theeefool, try this.

    Process Explorer 9.11 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4566

More informative than msconfig. Thanks Halo.
It may throw more light on what is running and whether it needs to run.
You are down from 35 processes so you are heading in the right direction.

Remember also, this is Windows ME we are investigating, not 98 or XP.

As theeefool asks, what troubles are you still having, if any? Bazza

Nearly everyone here will recommend that you ditch Norton AV, as a resouce hog.

My recommendation is to try either:-

    AVG http://www.majorgeeks.com/ download886.html or
    Avast download http://www.majorgeeks.com/download1968.html

Both are free. I switched from AVG to Avast. I'm very happy with Avast.
You have to register, by email, to get a licence key for Avast, but that is no big deal.

Norton is known to be hard to un-install. Check out the Symantec site for instructions if you have problems. Someone will post the link to those instructions. I have seen it here on MG but cannot find it, at the moment. Bazza

Just a little info for you on Avast! Home Edition 4.6.665

E-mail protection consists of two independent modules; first, there is a generic scanner working on the SMTP/POP3/IMAP4 protocol level. It is capable of protecting any existing e-mail client that uses these protocols. Second, there is a special plugin for MS Outlook only; it is completely transparent, requiring no special settings.

New feature of version 4 is heuristic analysis of e-mail scanners. It is extremely useful in protecting against new, unknown viruses and worms that are not possible to detect by the usual means. The heuristic module performs a thorough investigation of every e-mail message and watches for suspicious signs that might announce virus presence. When the number of those signs exceeds the user-defined level, the message is considered dangerous and the user is warned.

The only issues I've had with Avast is with windows 98 using dial up connections and then sending out large emails. But, that is the only issue I have had. Now, Xp and dialing up with sending large emails I haven't seen any problems.....

Ok I have dial-up and windows me and i like sending large files. Is this going to be a problem?

  42. theefool

    theefool Geekified

Try it and see....if you do have issues, turn off outgoing email scanning. It should be here:

Right click on the "A" system tray. Select On access protection control panel.

    Next: click on details...>>
next: make sure that internet email is highlighted
    next: click customize (near custom)
    next: click the tab SMTP
    next: uncheck scan outbound email

Do this, ONLY if you have any time out issues........

btw, you can right click on the "I" system tray icon and merge it with that "A" Icon. :)

Thx but will that mean my emails will not be scanned or will my computer be at risk? Will I still be able to get large files from people also? I want to be sure before I uninstall NAV.

well it worked! No errors yet! NAV uninstalled fine and avast is working swell. My system resources say 51% are free now. What can I do to get this better? I also have something that keeps coming up everytime my spysubtract does a quick scan at reboot. It's called 2020 Search.com the file is HKCU\Software\Dynamic Toolbar\. It's getting annoying it keeps coming up at every reboot.
