Keep laptop on battery power?

I have had hardware problems with my laptop. Now that it is repaired, two professional repair geeks that worked on it suggested that I stop using it plugged in except when I need to recharge the battery. Instead, operate it on battery power only and that will prolong the battery. Is that true? I thought it used to be, but that we had passed that stage of evolution with batteries.

I've always heard one should remove the battery unless it is charging to prolong battery life.

i wouldn't worry about it, i keep my laptop on ac power pretty much 24/7 with the battery plugged in over a year with no issues.;)

I had not considered removing the battery to prolong its life. Interesting. That would protect it for sure. That makes the option prudent.

I got instructions with my newest netbook (purchased in 2011) to condition the battery.
It said to run it down to close to 0% (it will shut off before then) then fully charge it before using it again. Do this three times.

I had it set to play a movie (on an sd card in the computer) so it wouldn't go to sleep or the screen dim because it thought I was actively using it.

I don't think that is true. It's my understanding that a battery has a limited number of discharge/recharge cycles; once that is reached, the battery won't hold a charge and it needs to be replaced.
I use mine plugged in usually when at home and on battery when traveling or using the netbook outside on the patio.

plodr, that is indeed interesting. Cell phones sometimes state instructions similarly. Like you, I keep my laptop plugged in almost all the time. The event that made me consider other options is my laptop, just over one and a quarter year old has run through three hard drives. That cannot be a string of bad luck. Something is bringing them down. A faulty mother board could do that. So I started, prior to owning this laptop, by purchasing two Asus laptops. One lasted a week and the mother board stopped. It was replaced with another Asus just like it which lasted four weeks and the mother board stopped. Now it appears this laptop, a Toshiba Satellite is doing the same thing but at a slower rate. The guys working on it think it has to do with the laptop staying power plugged instead of battery operated. I have never had this problem before, but I am learning a lot the hard way. Thanks for your input.

    Hi Serit,

My first thought is that your Laptop has a heat problem. Processor runs at half speed on battery so may not have the problem on battery. Hard drive apparent problems usually turn out to be software problems and not HDD failure.

    Luck, Jim

[quoye] just over one and a quarter year old has run through three hard drives[/quote] I feel your pain! The first computer I bought, an IBM purchased in 1988, did the same thing. I always felt there was something really wrong with the computer. At that point in time, I didn't know enough to even have an idea about what to look at.

Wow, you've had three different laptops die in short order. I think you need a licensed electrician to come in and check your wiring and outlets. I suspect something major is wrong with the power coming into your home. I'd guess it is over powered. That would fry things if you are getting too much current.
