Keep, take advantage of sales, or hold off?

Just curious... as to what would you do?

Do I keep my 4 year old computer with XP, or take advantage of sales and buy a new computer with Vista, or wait until Windows 7 comes out and buy a computer with that already installed?

I use the computer for basic stuff like surfing, e-mail, odd download....

Currently, I have a "thrown together" 4 year old computer.
XP SP3 Home, Pentium 4, 2.4 GHz, 2 GB RAM
As far as I know, no problems with it.

hmmm...I guess it depends on you, Oooops.;) If it was me, and your computer is working well for you and is quick enough and does all you want it to do, I'd wait until Windows 7 was out.

Of course, my problem is I can never manage to go with the 'sale/bargain' computer deals because I always decide I'm going to upgrade this or that. :-D

Right now my main computer is XP (my laptop). I just bought a new Vista desktop for the house (kids/general) use because my old desktop was slowing down A LOT.

    In my opinion, I'd wait.

Personally, I'd take advantage of sales to buy parts to upgrade, but wait until Windows 7 to actually do it. Best of both worlds, and you don't get stuck with a premade machine that someone else decides what you want on it. Although it sounds like you want a prefab, so I guess it'd be up to you.

Oooopsy, I guess I should've mentioned that my "thrown together" computer was made by someone else. Buying a pre-made computer would be more along my lines this time.

you can always buy win7 when it comes out. if you took advantage of whatever sale youre looking at on a new computer, youd have the nice new computer ready for a win7 install. but then again, if the computer you have now is working fine for you at the moment, a new computer isnt really needed at all. to me, it would kinda be a waste of money to buy a computer with better specs if the 4 year old one you have now is all you really need. just my 2 cents there.

I would wait. You are already thinking about waiting which mean you REALLY don't need it right now. By the time Windows 7 is out the current hardware that it out will be cheaper and newer/better things will have come about. Hold off.

I'd wait for Windows 7 if thats all your using your PC for at this point in time and it works ok for you still, before an upgrade, Windows 7 is touted.. baring some mishaps in testing or another corp moaning that the trashbin is anticompetitive it will be released around Q4 2009.

While I do like Vista and find it good to use, with the short timeline to Win7 and your current PC being ok still (I hope) then I would hang fire and get a PC thats current with that OS.

Dunno if you have used Vista at all yet? just asking as it will be similar in menus, usage etc to what Win7 will be like, it is in the early version I have used changed many of the things some didnt like with Vista, but essentially its expanded on Vista and whiel in later beta, RC, RTM builds it may change a little its not going to change too much from what its like at present.

I did a small write up here (early build and is different in the upcoming beta release build as that one was images from a pre-beta build) on some changes and if you search the net you will find much more info being released in Window 7 as the 1st beta (official) is due any day now, will be a CTP release for anyone to try, but warning would be the same as installing any new OS beta OS, dont use it on a main only PC as its not final, not all applications/driver may work, although if they work for Vista they in the majority will work in Win7.... onus is on the installer to understand a beta build can and does crash, break or not work as expected.

Thank you very much to all!

I'll wait for Windows 7 to come out before buying a newer computer.
    I've never used Vista.
